starter sprag clutch

Hi guys,(returning to my theem from last Feb:)Is it posible to get to the starter sprag clutch without having to remove the engine?J.B.

Hi jbon a f1 engine yes I replaced my Cush drive in the clutch and removed the sprag clutch bearing and cleaned it, I cant see why not on a commander, clutch drum reeds to be removed though. then you can get at the bearing.Check the clutch spider where the bearings run as I have seen un even wear on second hand clutch spiders causing the starter clutch to slip when the starters engaged.Regards Wayne

Done this several times on my Commander, yes it's quite possible, you just dismantle the primary drive. The sprag lives at the back of the clutch drum.Changing the starter motor is a different story though...Ian.

Thanks guys,I think the starter motor is fine wink and hopefully the prob:is with the sprag clutch and all it requires is a good clean,I will report in due course,rgds,J.B.
