Just stripped and cleaned a spare primary chain tensioner ready for my clutch job.
On re-assembly, I looked at the Commander parts diagram. It's always seemed odd to me that the upper slipper has an ally plug under the nylon plunger and the lower slipper just a nylon plunger, visually the wrong way up. The plungers are clearly shaped as a spring guide/support.
After some measurements, it's clear that if the lower one is built up exactly the same as the upper one, ie, an ally plug in first and the nylon plunger in with its wide boss against the plug, ( same as the top one ) the resulting spring lengths and pre-load is exactly the same as if done per the drawing.
but surely, the bottom plunger will act as the spring guide better, the same way the top is ?
I can't see any reason the bottom one can't be like the top one and have assembled it accordingly.
Any reasons against ?
Regards all,
Terry.
Commander tensioner plungers
Re: Commander tensioner plungers
I believe the MK3 Commandos have similar tensioners. There are several threads on Accessnorton discussing them but the threads are very confusing.

Re: Commander tensioner plungers
Terry,
Some time ago I ordered tensioner spares from ANL, the spares were of their usual high quality but found the ANL supplied assembly drawing different from the drawing in the Commander manual.
The ANL supplied drawing for the way the tensioner is assembled is different from the the one shown in the Commander parts book possibly because the ANL drawing is for a Commando? never having owned one I cant be sure. In any case I tried using the ANL way to assemble the tensioner but the action was not correct it caused the chain top run to be too tight, I reassembled according to the Commander drawings and have continued to do so since that was probably 10 years ago.
Hope this helps.

Re: Commander tensioner plungers
The lower tensioner appears assembled the same in both drawings. The upper plunger has the ally plug shown in the Commander dwg. It does seem as though it was a Commando tensioner used up on the Commanders. ( not familiar with either bike ).
I will be seeing a Commando expert on Wednesday, I will be interested to find out how both plungers are assembled in them. Maybe there was a dimension difference in the engine cases and slight changes required to get tensions correct ?
My quandry remains - with the ally plug in the upper plunger and the plunger the opposite way up to the lower one, the spring fitted length and pr-load is the same !
Should have mine in bits within 2 weeks, some pondering to do then !
