Fix for ignition issues

Post by IHNR »

MikeBristol's topic about starting a Classic reminded me of an obscure issue I've seen. It is not Mike's issue, but hopefully this post may help someone at some point. I believe it affects the Classic, Commander and F1 but not the IP2. I had starting problems and then one day I was unable to get a spark from my plugs at all. It turned out that it was down to the ballast resistor (part number 06.2098). I suspect that some people who are new to the rotaries would not have looked at this part for an ignition problem so I thought I'd pass this on in case it helps anyone.

Yep, I to had a Balance Resister problem(just the once) with my Classic(I think it was "Del Boy" who put the idea in my head)
If memory serves there was a procedure that did away with the use of the Balance Resister which I used,(not 100% sure though,it was probably 30+ years ago)J.B.

JB,

When I first purchased my Commander and joined the forum, and realising the value of being a member of the forum, I read a number of posts as was seeking help with the ownership of these marvellous machines, many of the posts involved the ballast resistor with the fault seeming to be that the engine would start but stop when the start button was released.

I remember that RN had a fix if this happened on the road.

As a preventive measure and not being sure how old my ballast resistor was I purchased and fitted a spare with tails long enough so that if the original failed I could quickly connect the new one.

Fingers crossed I have yet to have an issue with the ballast resistor, long may it continue.

Tony
