Bike starts well hot or cold and then runs well to 3,500 rpm; then stutters stalls and surges, then above 4,000 rpm it's fine, well up to 6,000 rpm which is all i'll ever use.
I'm thinking carb set up? Is this a normal vice with the bike?
Bad flat spot, any ideas? Re5.

first thing to do is ultrasonic clean the carb then set it up properly normal cleaning won't cure it only ultrasonic works.but get yourself a workshop manual before you attempt to strip the carb regards mike

It could be the port valve timing.....which can be a pain; the hardest part is understanding exactly what is required. Some years back, Roland Van Cauter wrote an excellent description of the adjustment process, however, English was not his first language, so I sat down one evening and made it easily readable for my own purposes.....I found it was a really well written piece by someone who understood the RE5 carb. I still have it as a word document and I will happily email you a copy if you want it. ..........Mick.
