Spark colour

Post by mickm »

I’m having problems trying to start my Classic. It’s been dormant over the winter. It rode into the garage, but will not restart. I’ve replaced the plugs, leads, and plugcaps. I was getting a green led on pressing the button, with a red flashing on cranking. After cleaning all the connections I now get no green led, a flashing red, and a white/red spark. I’ve cleaned earths from battery and alternator. Have two batteries so no voltage drop, but still no joy. I’m at the point of sending the unit to Graham for testing. Before I do this has anyone got any ideas that may help.

Hi, is the bike firing at all?
If not I guess the bike must smell of petrol?
Just checking

Hi Roy. It’s not firing at all. Plenty of vapour comming out when looking for a spark.i was wondering if the relay has dirty terminals would that give a lower voltage/ amps to the coils that producing a poor spark? So new relay on the way! How many earth points are on the bike any ideas ? That’s another thing to check. So off to the garage again.

At the moment I have a flashing red led when the engine is stationary and when cranking. A big white spark from both plugs which is quite powerful as I have just had a belt from it! What is the function of the relay?

my Classic has no green or red flashing lights, did you by chance swap the spark plug wires or coil wires from left to right?

Hi Mick, pretty sure you have a minimag ignition unit fitted which has red/green indicator to show the status.
I have dug out the paper work from minimag and it states the following:
Red: side stand is down (engine will turn over but will not fire)
Red flashing: ignition on, engine stationary, side stand is up
Red and Green steady: engine warm up

After warm up
None: Engind idling
Green: engine speed 1000-2000rpm (advance curve)
Red: Revolution Limiter 9500rpm
Only other problem I have had was with the ballast resister which allowed the bike to fire when the starter was pressed but the stopped when I took my finger off the button.
Check the side stand switch as well Mick.
Good luck
