omc 528 rotary american made

Post by modelbox »

hello i have a 1974 omc 528cc rotary engine, i bought it to use measuring tools to re-mfg. it for off road motorcycles and not to make a profit on the design this is strictly a personal venture. all said. this engine was the largest built in america in the 70s for snowmobiles . it is rotor air and oil cooled the oil is mixed into the gas for lubrication.i thought it was a solid engine ...............but after looking at the combustion chamber i noted that it has a thin steel liner that is (glued ?) to the aluminum rotor housing !i want to get away from this liner thing.i intend to build these 528cc engines for my off road cycles.i have many questions to ask of this forum, such as rotor clearance to housing, questions about different types of lubrication, machining ,and of course rotor size for cc range.the omc has 45 hp so with a dual rotor engine air cooled will bring 90 hp,not bad for a light weight dirt bike, with a snowmobile belt drive transmission !* does anyone know how norton gets the high hp rating with a cc size of 294 ? 294cc seems small by the 528 cc omc !thats all for now...........................L.A.

The liner you describe is unlikely to be 'glued', I think. Here, the Norton and Fichtel & Sachs roatries use a plating - while I believe Mazda use (or used to use) a chrome rubbing surface for their rotor housings.I think I am correct in saying that the engine you have is pretty well unknown outside of the USA; how common are they there?

the F & S DO NOT HAVE ANY COATING ON THE ROTOR HOUSING AND FROM THE PHOTOS THE NORTON DOESNT EITHER 1THE OMC 528................... 15,000 WERE BUILT AND USED IN SNOWMOBILES................ BUT THAT WAS IN THE 70s.

Um... Fichtel & Sachs certainly do having a plating on their KC27 housings. It is 'Elnisil' which is either similar or the same as 'Nickisil'; I believe this is nickel silicon carbide - and without it the alloy of the housings would be far too soft for the apex seals continuous rubbing.NSU use the same - as do Suzuki in the RE5.You might get away without a plating on the side plates - but a molybdenum insert is very popular (in Nortons) for its wear resistance and oil retention.

its funny because when i opened the rotor cas on my f & s 303 the rotor housing looks like bare aluminum ?

Yes, I confirm that: I recently bought a factory new side plates for F&S KM914B, and there is no plating:<a href="http://img57.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1003953.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/1702/1003953.th.jpg" border="0"/></a>But smaller engines - KM48 - 160 ccm, and KM37 - 107 ccm has it:<a href="http://img57.imageshack.us/my.php?image ... or1dq5.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/3182/m ... dq5.th.jpg" border="0"/></a>I've read, that plates with no coating are doing OK under light and medium loads......
