Norton Interpol 2 For Sale

Post by lionel »

Interpol 2, ex military police, will be sold, probably on e-Bay this October. It has the BMW-style police fairing, dual seat and large Krauser panniers and top box, making a superb comfortable tourer. The engine was moly-coated by Norton around 2003 and has not been ridden much since as I moved to South Africa and it has been stored in a garage near Petersfield and only used a little when I visited England.\r\rVery much a riding bike - the fairing shows some scratching and one pannier has a wear hole. Only problem I recall is the thermometer is reading too low a temperature and should be looked at - I replaced the thermocouple and it read low after that. There is some Rotella left, a drum of gear oil and full workshop manual and parts list.\r\rThe bike has been off-road for over a year, and I am visiting the UK on September 23rd. My plan is to charge the battery (replace if necessary), start the bike and get MOT and 3-month tax ASAP. Then i can advertise it as "taxed and tested". I am in the country till Oct 26th, so people can come to see the bike with prior warning. So I'll probably advertise it on e-Bay, unless pressed for time. The alternative is to sell it via Startright.

I only seem to be able to do a 10-day auction on e-bay, so will put her on around the 13th October.\r\rHere is the description I willbe posting:\r\rIn good running order, but with damage to fairing and scratched paintwork. Important feature for this model is that the engine had moly coating done by Norton about 6 years ago and has not done great mileage since. A superb comfortable tourer with huge detachable Krauser panniers and top box and a joy to ride on the open road, but typically inclined to overheat in extended urban traffic crawling. The thermometer works - was replaced recently - but reads a little low so needs attention. Analogue clock and the usual super-accurate police speedo. Some police switches remain, but it was converted by previous owner to 2-seat tourer. Although she lived a tough life, sometimes without a garage and sometimes my only transport, I always took her for regular servicing by the book, either with her previous owner (a Devon motorcycle dealer) or with Norton or with a local motorcycle specialist. I have some Rotella oil and a drum of gear oil left (down in Gloucestershire). This model, having been sold only for military and police use (mine was ex-military police), is very solid, comfortable and weatherproof with lots of stainless fittings and so ages gracefully but does not come up flashy unless converted to Classic specification.\rA much loved vehicle, but I moved abroad 3 years ago and she has been standing under cover in a garage, only used on visits to UK, and she deserves a better owner. Last used 2 years ago, but tyres still had 10 and 20 psi pressure and, after turning over and cleaning plugs she started within 3 seconds. 2 years ago the MOT passed first time but with 2 recommendations: clutch cable outer is worn and the top box mounting should be secured. Again she passed MOT first time on 26th September 2008.\rI have a complete workshop manual and illustrated parts list but stupidly left those abroad so will have to post them to the buyer. I will be around for viewing the bike from evening of Sunday 19th October until Saturday 25th. Viewing before that date might be arranged, given enough notice.[/img]

Image\r\rhere are pictures of the Interpol - I hope it works. \r\rIn response top a query about pricing: i was thinking of putting a starting price of £999 and i would be disappointed if i do not get £2000 for her as I spent over £1500 at Norton factory on moly coating and thorough service a few years, but not many miles, ago.\r\rIn case pix don't come up, here is the URL of the gallery:\rhttp://gallery.me.com/snelllionel/100010

Further info

Further info:\r\rFirst registered in 1995 and I bought her in May 1997 for £2500 from a Devon mcycle dealer who had converted her to tourer from her Military police specification. I took her back for routine servicing there a couple of times until he retired. \r\rIn around 2002 she developed a problem of conking out on long journeys that Norton failed to solve first time. When I took her back they found a small kink in an internal oil pipe that had produced intermittent oil problems on long trips. As the engine was stripped to solve that they did the moly coating and total service that cost me over £1500. Meanwhile I moved to London and she had much less use. I think I did 20-30k miles on her altogether.\r\rQuestion raised about private sale: the reason for auction is that I need money. If I could be sure of getting back my original £2500, then I'd go for that and be glad she was in the hands of a club member or enthusiast.
