Rear Sprocket oil leak IP2
I have a oil leak from my rear sprocket throwing oil onto the rear wheel and tyre. I am unable to locate a new seal , I was thinking of draining the oil and replacing it with a heavy grease to lubricate the chain.Does the oil Lubricate anything else other than the chain?

It lubricates the sprocket carrier inner bearing, which should be ok with grease.Depending on which air-cooled you have, there may be a needle roller bearing supporting the outer end of the sleeve gear (the outrigger bearing). This one takes the same chain load as the rear sprocket bearing, but spins faster and may struggle without adequate lubrication. There are a few modified bikes running without gaiters; perhaps their owners might care to comment on chain lubrication?R.graham butterworth wrote:Does the oil Lubricate anything else other than the chain?
Just a bike-less old fogey now. Boo-hoo!
