Re: Commander on Ebay
The guy needs to stop taking the optimism pills! Have you seen what he wants for less than smart ex-Italian army Moto Guzzi Alce and Gilera VT's! Half that might be more like it given that it needs a fair bit of work done to fairing and bodywork to make it sensibly useable. Even then thats mostly lo...

Hi Terry
I can dig out mine and do some pictures tomorrow. I've had the bike from new so it should still have the standard complement of tools.
PM me your E-mail so I know where to send the pictures.

Re: Commander and Krauser version
Pretty sure its just the rear fairing unit that is different plus some extra metalwork to stabilise the panniers. Not sure about the handle for lifting onto the centre stand as I specified crash-bars for my Krauser Commander. I think one of thee three seats I have is off the ordinary, non Krauser ve...

Re: Pannier lid seal Commander
Its bound to be a standard extruded rubber section so its just a question of looking for a manufacturer or supplier who lists that size.
I've had good service from COH Bains in Tunbridge Wells in the past https://coh-baines.co.uk who are conveniently local to me.

Re: Pannier lid budget locks
These are basic "cam locks". A google search will uncover plenty of suppliers. Huge range of sizes and quality out there. The uber cheap ones will be crap so don't try to save too much money. These aren't exactly high security devices. Market is for the better form of desk drawer, lockers,...

Actually most types of stainless steel are magnetic in greater or lesser degree. Only Austenitic types are always non magnetic. Ferritic, Martensitic, Duplex and some Precipitation Hardening types are generally at least weakly magnetic. The common grades that folk like us usually encounter eg 303, 3...

Anyone got any pictures of these rare Supreme Commanders? I tried googling it but all I got was Ed Straker's car from 70's TV series UFO! Send me a private message with your E-mail and I'll throw a few pictures of mine your way. Can do special poses if you want. Hafta say that you need to be seriou...

Re: For Sale Supreme Commander
The oil catch bottle sits in the frame drain line running to the left hand inlet tract. As standard when the excess oil builds up enough to reach the drain tube it is sucked directly into the left hand inlet and burnt. Cue smokescreen and, often, fouled plug if you jump on the brakes! Catch bottle s...

Re: For Sale Supreme Commander
Supreme is what the Commander should have been. Being able to use modern tyres appropriate for a bike of that size makes a huge difference. Solid stable and accurate handling responding as it should to countersteering. Brings home just how terrible the standard XJ900 based front end is. Although I g...

Re: Tyre weight limit
Not convinced your sums are quite right given that some of your weight and most of the fuel tank and tank bag load will be on the front tyre. But it does sound a bit marginal. Especially given that modern tyres in Commander sizes are more middleweight orientated. Not so much in load capacity but mor...

Popham turned out nice and sunny as forecasted but had my doubts on the way along the A272 with a fair bit of rain and wind in some stretches. Best part of a decade since I went any distance that way. Rather a sharp reminder of just how long it used to take to get anywhere in pre motorway days unles...

Re: Commander Hot rear brake
The big advantage of DOT 5 silicon brake fluid is said to be that it is not hydroscopic so it doesn't absorb water. Because of this it is claimed to be ideal for vehicles that are rarely used because the properties won't change in storage. Allegedly it doesn't degrade at all so can last "foreve...

Re: Commander Hot rear brake
I presume the pedal is returning fully and all the link pushrod adjustments are set correctly. Both my Commanders have liked a bit of slack in the system. When you pulled the pistons out did you look for corrosion / deposits in the seal grooves. Pretty much anything in there will make the pistons ti...

Re: Charging issue - high revs equal low volts??
If you have some doubts as to the quality of the original loom probably the best fix would be to make a complete new set of wiring for the charging and metering system running direct to the battery. Dunno how your warning light works but if its anything other than a simple equipotential system I'd l...

Re: Charging issue - high revs equal low volts??
Had similar issues with my second Commander. But not as bad. First fix was a new section of wiring loom running direct from the alternator to th regulator and then to the battery. Which seemed to work for a while. Next try was an aftermarket "improved" regulator which made less than no dif...

Re: Engine vibration at high RPM
When mounting the FJ calipers I elected to retain the standard bottom mounting bolt position and swing the top back to get the pads contacting the right part of the disk. The FJ calipers are longer than the standard ones so the top mounting needs to be higher than the original fork leg boss as well ...

Re: Engine vibration at high RPM
Messing around with carb mixture settings by ear is never a good idea with multiple constant depression carburettors. You end up chasing one error with another so its pretty much impossible to hit a reliable setting that works over a range of conditions. Finding todays sweet spot is possible but goo...

I used R40. Probably best to put it on a regular 6,000 mile / once a year change schedule unless yours lives in a Bugatti standard heated motor house. The Oerlikon Balzers treatment is a coating, not hardening. Can't say I really understand how it works but apparently that sort of thing is almost routine now for motorsport. Both mine did pretty well on Castrol R. Not something folk normally consider as gear oil but castor based lubricants do have one of the highest pressure capabilities of any simple oil. Main issues are thermal as it goes off when it gets too hot, and environmental as it needs a pretty well sealed gea...
