Re: Commander ignition systems
I replaced the Boyer unit on my Classic many thousands of miles ago with a Minimag one,the main drawback was the Minimag did NOT have a wire for the Ignition light Hi John,Have you stopped taking the tablets smiley ? The ignition warning light wire comes (came) from the voltage regulator on IP2's a...

Ian,As I was directly involved in all the Norton ignition systems, I can offer this for you.The first Norton rotary ignition system was the Sparkrite CDI, later enhanced with a separate retard box, fitted as original equipment to all Interpol 2's.The ignition unit, matching voltage regulator, retard...

Re: starting up on one cylinder
Ian,The usual fault with Boyer ignitions is that they're ok when cold, but fail as they warm up. I would, therefore, suspect something else such as a corroded connection somewhere between the ignition unit and the coils.I know access 'up there' is somewhat restrictive for normal sized hands, but cha...

Re: starting up on one cylinder
Hi Paul,The tacho takes its signal from from the negative terminal of one coil. I can never remember for sure whether it's the black/white wire or the black/yellow; the latter I think. No signal from the ignition unit to that coil = no spark+no tacho. Since it mends itself after a short while sugges...

Roy,As yours is a converted IP2 (as is mine), speedo/tacho relation depends on what final drive sprockets are actually fitted and what rear tyre section you have.Front sprockets can be either 17, usually, or 18 on some early bikes; rear can occasionally be 42, ofter 43, and on late IP2 and Classic, ...

Re: Moly Coating
A star indicating moly? Optimists! All Norton rotaries, except F1's, have a stamped asterisk before and after the stamped engine number. It's called the limit mark, and was intended to stop unscrupulous persons changing the engine number. I mean, no such person would have an asterix stamp would they V...

Re: Moly Coating
Pete, There are Norton rotaries that have done tens of thousands of miles without needing moly. It seems to depend on how the bike is used/abused.With a few exceptions, molying was done by Graham at Startright, Norton Shenstone, Norton Rugeley, and myself, with the first customer ones done in about ...

It's possible to view members photo files, but the facility to add pictures seemed to disappear in the middle of 2013.I tried, and failed, several times to add photos and think the loss occured after the site had been upgraded at that time. It's quite possibly something quite simple for a Forum Admin...

Re: Norton Classic Spotted
Jeff,There have been several claims about the 'last Norton'. Classic #100, for example, was completed on 23rd August 1988 and quite a few of the batch were built after. "LE" numbers were allocated at time of order whereas gearbox numbers are sequential at time of actual build. Hence LE100 ...

Roy,For the generator to charge the battery, voltage output from the regulator must be higher than battery voltage. With ignition off or engine stopped, battery voltage is usually around 12.00 - 12.7 volts. With the engine running, battery voltage measured at the terminals is almost always higher, ty...

BS1490 LM13TF to be precide. A high silicon (10 - 13%) fully heat treated aluminium alloy with hardness in the 100 - 150 Brinell range, typically used in the manufacture of pistons due to its relatively low expansion rate. All Norton rotary motorcycle end plates were made from this and had the workin...

Roy,This may not be relevant, but I've been static running a rebuilt Classic today and noticed that, although the engine is idling smoothly at about 600, flicking the side stand down causes the tacho needle to rise and fall by over 500 rpm with no change in engine speed.I expected the engine to stop...

Roy,The brown/white wire comes from the fusebox to the ballast resistor and then on to the + terminal of both coils; it's a direct, fused, lead which, as you say, is live at all times. There is also a brown/white wire from the ignition unit which connects to the coils side of the ballast resistor.Th...

Re: left hand rotor oil bias
Terry,The plenum chamber has a pipe to scavenge out excess oil to the l/h inlet pipe. This oil is only sucked out when the throttle is opened, hence the smoke when you move off. When the engine is running faster, the oil tends to be carried through the plenum and into both carburettors so you don't ...

Suggestions? Jeff As I mentioned in a previous post, the correct decal number, as shown in the Parts List, is 92-097 8 . Is that a typo on the ANIL invoice, or did you ask for 92-0976?The tanks were hand-made from simple resin tool pressings and are less than perfect profile under the paint. No two...
