Norton Classic paint colour

I apologise for repeating a question that other members have discussed in previous threads in 2016 and 2019. However, I am having some parts repainted for my Norton P43 Classic, and I want to get the silver-grey paint right. My restorer has asked me for the paint code for the shade of silver-grey th...

Re: Classic's and their owners

I own LE022. I bought it from its original owner in 2004.

Its fuel tank was wrecked in an accident in 2008. It has used an Interpol II tank and side panels ever since. Anyone who can supply me with a good Classic tank for me to restore LE022 to original condition, please get in touch!

Re: Who sells oil for rotary Nortons?

Thanks David.

I think I'm only 90 miles from you. When my Tiger is running again (currently awaiting a front fork oil seal) may I ride over to you to buy and decant some Rotella?

Who sells oil for rotary Nortons?

I live in Oxford. I have recently put my Norton Classic back on the road after a decade out of use. It now needs engine oil. Back in the 2000s, I found Rotella was the cheapest suitable oil, so I bought it in bulk from Dave Weighell in Pickering. But a I know that couple of years ago Dave wanted to ...

Re: Norton Classic starting problem

The man who never made a mistake never made much. Yes it's the starter solenoid. Shorting across its two terminals gets the starter motor turning and the bike runs fine. The Norton Motors online shop lists Commando starter solenoids for £32.90. I didn't find any mention of solenoids for Wankels on th...

Re: Norton Classic starting problem

"When you press the starter button, can you hear the solenoid click?"- No."If you take off the rubber boots from the main terminals (big red wires) and carefully short them together with a long screwdriver, does the motor work?"- If you mean the terminals at either end of the bal...

Re: Norton Classic starting problem

The ballast resistor is doing its job but now something else has failed. The Classic is refusing to start on the button again. It bump-starts easily and runs well. Ideas please?

Re: Norton Classic starting problem

Correction: 4th January! I 'phoned every auto parts shop I could think of in Oxford, but ballast resistors are so last century that none of them holds them in stock any more. However, a small shop in Kidlington managed to order one and get it delivered by teatime the same day. It's 1.6 Ohms rather t...

Re: Post your favourite stupid bystander's comment.

An elderly couple stopped to admire one of my old British bikes and the husband told me that he rode lots of British machines "back in the old days". Then he declared with cast-iron certainty "The best bike I ever had was a Royal Enfield Square Four. I used to take you out on it, didn...

Re: Norton Classic starting problem

Thanks Richard and Derek, both of you seem to be correct. The ballast resistor looked like it had been getting damp and its contacts were corroded. I cleaned the contacts but that didn't cure it. I've now taken the resistor indoors and perched it on top of my boiler flue to dry out. If that doesn't c...

Norton Classic starting problem

My Classic has had starting problems for months. It often fails to hold enough charge to turn over the starter motor and fire up. Some months ago I fitted a sealed for life battery but this didn't help much. Then over Christmas I didn't use ther bike for a fortnight. Now the snow's gone, I've recharg...

Wanted: air-cooled Norton left-hand engine plate

I have inflicted major engine damage to my 1985 Interpol 2 (engine no. 3168). Graham at Startright is ready to rebuild it but he needs one more replacement part: a left hand end-plate. Please can you help Graham and I to find this one part for my air-cooled engine?I was hoping to go to the Wa...
