Re: E 5 or E10
They certainly will run on both fuels. However the decal on the petrol tank cover on my Commander says 4 Star min requirement 97 Octane, but the owners manual specifies 95 Octane. So I'm not sure which is correct. Perhaps this is because back in 1988 in the UK you could only buy 2 star (92 Octane) o...

Thanks Clive. It's amazing what you can find on the internet.
Will do further investigation (when it's warm enough to go into the garage) and report back.

Re: Indicator problem.
Hi Tony, I do have a wiring diagram. Perhaps I was not clear in my long-winded explanation, but the flasher unit that failed only had two spade connectors and the new replacement unit has three spade connectors as it should be. So I have tried to reinstate the system as it would have left the factor...

Re: Indicator problem.
Hi John,
If nobody can come up with a diagnosis/solution I might take your advice, and that would replicate how the indicator system was set up before the flasher unit failed. But it would be a pity not to be able to use the very convenient self-cancelling function.

I have a 1990 Commander, apologies for the long-winded explanation: The problem With the bike stationary, when I switch on the ignition and turn on the right indicator nothing happens. Switch off the ignition and turn it back on and then turn on the left indicator first and it flashes and if I then ...

Hi Richard, Just following up on this never ending thread. I searched high and low for a windscreen washer bottle similar to yours, but without success. Eventually I found a 1 litre aluminium tank on Amazon that fitted snugly into the left battery carrier after the side brackets of the tank were cut...

Is anybody going to the Popham Megameet tomorrow? I'll be there on my T160 but would be good to meet any rotarians. It will be my first time at Popham so I don't know the layout. Re: koni shocks repair
Just checked the Commander workshop manual and apparently the number on the spring refers to the spring length, not the spring rate.
So:
My bike 215
Ikon website 235 (7610-1283 15/21/26)
Workshop manual 250 (7610-1283 15/21/28)
Which one would you choose!

Re: koni shocks repair
Just picking up on this old thread. The damping on my Koni shocks is pretty poor so I am thinking about buying new replacements from Ikon. If you look at their website they recommend a 235 spring for a Commander. My shocks have 215 springs which I assume were the original fitment. I only ride solo (...

Re: running light bulbs fog lights
Hi Trev, I too had problems sourcing replacement Whelen light units. The silvering on one of my refelctors was in poor condition but I managed to get the plastic lens off without breaking it and re-silvered using a modelling pen. Not perfect but good enough for daylight lights. The back of the refle...

Re: New horns
Hi Trev, I replaced my horns with twin trumpet style horns made by Fiamm which I believe were the original fitment. I don't have the sales receipt so I guess I bought them on Amazon or eBay. The old horns did not work and when I took them off the bike and shook them they were full of water, so make ...

Commander fuel tank filler cap
Does anybody know where I can get a new fuel tank filler cap. My one doesn't seal very well so I get some fumes in the garage. I know they are supposed to vent a little but mine is excessive and when locked I can still rotate the cap about 45 deg. The rubber seal is slightly compressed where it seal...

I would like a rear carrier for my Commander too. If we had enough like minded folk we could get a batch made at a half reasonable cost.
Would anybody else be interested ?

Re: Commander jumps out of gear
Thanks Joe, I effectively did the same thing on my T160. Those springs had shortened through use/age, but the new springs didn't really improve the gear shifting.
As I previously posted I will try to live with the problem so long as it doesn't get worse, but I am a fiddler...!

Re: Commander jumps out of gear
Thanks Richard, very informative.
I didn't realise I would have to take the engine out of the frame. On balance, and so long as it doesn't get worse, I think I will live with it and not use full power in first gear as you suggest.

Commander jumps out of gear
Hello experts,
My Commander jumps out of first gear under heavy acceleration. Under normal riding there isn't a problem.
I believe the gearbox is essentially a T160 gearbox. Any tips or recommendations before I pull it apart to investigate?
Thanks
Philip

Re: tyres
Checked the Avon website again and I made a mistake. Avon do make a 110/90V Roadrider for an 18" diameter rim, sorry my bad. I noticed that the 120/90V has a preferred rim width of 2.75" which corresponds exactly to the rear wheel rim width as specified in the owners' manual. The 100/90V h...

Re: tyres
I bought my Commander earlier this year and it came with Avon Roadriders which I quite like on other bikes. The bike appears to be quite standard but the rear tyre is 120/90V which is wider than the standard profile of 110/90V. I can see no evidence of the tyre rubbing anywhere. I only ride solo and...

Re: IP2 starter motor
Dave Madigan makes starter motors for Triumph/BSA tripples. I believe the Commander starter is the same as the one used on the T160 Trident, so maybe his starter could be used. I understand that his motors are lighter and more powerful than the Lucas model. See attachment for his parts list. Also ag...

Commander fuel gauge
The fuel gauge on my Commander shows full when the tank is full, but it shows empty when the tank is still half full. Does anybody know if the gauge itself is adjustable, or will I need to bend the float arm on the sender unit in the fuel tank?
Any advice would be very welcome

Hi Terry,
I need a daylight unit too. Did you ever track down a supplier?
If so, I'd appreciate any contact details you can forward plus the part number and price.
Thanks
