Re: F1 Sport Running on One Rotor
Guys - sorry I just released as I reply to another thread, that I hadn't closed off this thread with the final answer.
It was the carbs! again!!! The cold start mechanism wasn't returning properly. Once I fixed that, we where on the road again!!
Thanks again for all the help.
Barney.

Re: Wits End
John, I don't know if this will help, but I've just been through a very frustrating period with my F1 Sport, when it would only run on one rotor. I stripped and rebuilt the carbs twice. Replaced the coil, send the ECU back to Mini Mag for testing, and did every possible form of diagnosis known to ma...

Re: F1 Sport Running on One Rotor
Hi Joe - thanks for the reply. I'll recheck all the connections, but I don't think is a copper corrosion problem. This bike was completely rebuilt by Richard in Rugeley in '05 and has only done 7k dry miles since then. The loom and connectors are all very clean and new. I had an email from Richard o...

F1 Sport Running on One Rotor
Hi All, I have an F1 Sport that was rebuilt by Richard back in the NML days. I've got a consistent problem with it running only on one rotor. The symptoms are, Bike starts fine, runs on both rotors Warms up a little, drops back to one rotor. (Before the ticker drops on the temperature sensor) Occasi...

Re: F1 Sport poor running
Hi Richard (and all), I'm back with carb problems again!! This time the fuel pump keeps running and over flooding the carbs!! It's obviously the float needles, but I thought I'd rebuild and clean the carbs completely. Do you have the correct burlen part numbers for the kit, or for the various parts?...

Re: F1 Sport poor running
Sorry Richard and all, I forgot to post a reply to this!Cleaning the carbs was all that was needed!! I didn't have the dreaded jelly in the float bowls, but a sort of limescale had formed on the needles. This was pretty easy to remove and the bike runs lovely again now.Spot on again Richard!!Thank y...

Hi all,It's a long time since I posted to this group, but I hope everybody is well?I tried to contact Richard on the old email I had for him, but it's a couple of years since I spoke to him and I'm guessing his email might have changed, so I thought I'd post here instead! Here's a snippet of the emai...

Re: F1 Sport Engine Cuts out
Hi Richard,I have an NML unit on my bike. Sn 002 I seem to recall. I think the lights still work when the ignition fails. Is their a seperate fuse for the ignition? Or could this be a stand or kill switch problem? Thanks again Richard,Barney.

F1 Sport Engine Cuts out
Hi all,It's been a while since I posted and I'm pleased to say I had a couple of thousand trouble free miles. However the last couple of miles have been blighted with a problem.Symptoms,1 - The bike misfires and I often get a back fire. (Sometimes quite spectacular!)2- The tacho immediately dies as ...

Re: F1 Sport - more running problems
Hello Richard and all,So I now have the tick over fixed. It's difficult to say what the RPM actually is as the needle only just lifts of the rest on the tacho, but I guess around 600RPM. The actual adjustment was easy, but getting to the adjusters is a pain! However, several cups of tea and a long s...

Re: F1 Sport - more running problems
Hi Richard,I've got it running at about 1k on hot idle at the moment. (I notice it lifts slightly to about 1.1 - 1.2k if the bikes been in traffic and is getting up towards the red zone on the temp gauge.)To get the tick over to this level I adjusted the throttle cable tension at the twist grip. I d...

Re: F1 Sport - more running problems
Hello all,GOOD NEWS!!!I think (touch wood) we've solved all the problems. I had the bike out for a 120 mile run this morning, without a hiccup.I finished putting the carbs back on the bike yesterday - it started fine I just had to adjust the tickover. Interestingly it was ticking over so slowlyafter...

Re: F1 Sport - more running problems
Thanks for all the follow on comments and just a quick note to update on the situation with my F1S.I've now got all the new o-rings and float needles. The only obvious problem I noted during the carb strip was the paper seal missing of one of the cold start mechanisms. The o-rings looked in good sha...

Re: F1 Sport - more running problems
Hello both,Here's this morning's instalment!I've stripped the bike. I must have had a serious float needle issue. The carb spacer/mounting box had about 250ml of fuel in it!! So it was obviously running a bit rich!!I've removed the carbs. I elected to remove these from the copper down pipe and leave...

Re: F1 Sport - more running problems
Thanks Richard.I definitely think it's a carb problem now. As you say, the pump stops running when I squeeze the line to the carb, so I think it has to be a needle/dirt problem. Please could you tell me what the spec/model number of the carbs are? I'm guessing they are 1 1/4 HIF Type 4?Many thanks,Ba...

Re: F1 Sport - more running problems
It seems todays work hasn't fixed it after all! After a good 20 mile ride with perfect running I started to get the missfire problem again. The bike stalled and after an hour of trying to restart it I've given up and called Carole Nash recovery for the second time in a week! Some new observations thi...

Re: F1 Sport - more running problems
Hi again both. So I have started to strip the bike this morning. Note the bike started first push this am!Coils seem ok. I even primary windings about 8 ohms primary to secondry about 7k. I even baked these at 80 degrees for an hour to see if temperature effected them. It didn't. I've removed the bl...

Re: F1 Sport - more running problems
Thanks both for the replies. I can understand how dirty or poorly set up carbs could give poor slow running and tick over. But would this cause the bike to stop completely from motorway speeds?Barney.

F1 Sport - more running problems
Graham, Richard - Please help!I'm still having horrible problems with my F1 Sport.I traced the poor starting to a failed regulator/rectifier unit. That's now been replaced and the battery holds charge, and the starting is vastly improved.I still have the annoying poor slow running, where it feels li...

Hi Richard,I'm now convinced I had a regulator problem, and I'm now confident it's fixed!!!I went to see the guys at Electrex today. I can not say enough good things about them. They have supplied me with an RT99 rectifier and regulator. This is the closest match to the one that I had taken off the b...

F1 Sport - Misfire and high tickover
Dear Richard and all,I thought I'd start a new thread as it would make reading easier for anybody with a similar problem in the future.Having solved the overcharging problems on the F1 I now have the two other problems I mentioned in my previous threads.1) High Tickover. The tickover now fluctuates ...

Re: F1 Sport Failed Starter Motor
Hi Richard,Thanks again for your help.I hardwired the three wires from the rotor to the reg, but I'm still reading 15.3v across the battery. It doesn't seem to climb about 15.3v and the tickover never got above about 1.5k. At one point it dropped to about 600rpm, but then went up as the voltage clim...

Re: F1 Sport Failed Starter Motor
Hi Richard,It looks like I may have a problem with my voltage regulator.I measured the battery voltage at 13.6v. With the ignition running the voltage went to14.7v and then to 15.45v just as the bike was warming up. The voltage was slowly, but steadily creaping up all the time.I'm assuming the regul...

Re: F1 Sport Failed Starter Motor
Hi Richard,You where spot on. I took the battery off as part of dismantling the tank/fairing. I put the battery on charge, and it seemed OK. In a last ditch attempt before beginning with the starter, I tried the battery again without the tank fitted. I noticed a horrible sulfur smell, which immediat...

Hi All - I'm a newbie to this forum and a newbie to the world of rotaries. I have a 91 F1 Sport which was rebuilt by Norton in 2005. I've had the bike about a year now, and I have a few teething problems. The latest problem is critical as the bike won't even start!!Symptom- for a while now the bike ...
