Bike Insurance

Post by johnbirchjar »

Hi Guys, just recieved the new insurance for the Classic from Footman James, couple of "new changes" (A) Not insured to ride on "any derestricted toll road, including The Nurburgring"(which means about 75%? of all motorways on the continent,AND,the M6 toll motorway) (B) Not insured to ride someone elses bike if it was manufactured after the 1st of Jan 1993 evil, so if you insure with F/J,READ THE SMALL PRINT exclaim, ride safe,J.B.

John,Thanks for the warning - I'll look out for that when my renewal arrives.Restrictions on the Nurburgring I can understand. On the days when it is open for public use, I believe it is classed as an unrestricted public highway and not as a race/test track so the normal road-going insurance applies. There is something afoot to put it on the market, which means it could become a private test track, or houses, and certainly not an occasional public road. All public roads in the UK have been restricted for a long time, so the M6 Toll (restricted to 70mph) is ok. I'm not sure if there are any unrestricted roads in Europe now, but drivers of big Mercedes saloons don't seem to bother anyway.

I`m insured with Peter James. Very,Very good. £301.00 for two Commanders,Egli Vincent, Norton Dominator, Laverda 750SF & 500c.c. Scotton.Agreed value for the Egli £25,000 & only one photo required. £4,500 agreed value on the Dommie. No photo required. The others are market value. Easy to talk to & exceptionally quick with documentation. Highly Recommended.Derek F.

I have just renewed with Footman James £138 for an IP2 and a Commando. the quote from Peter James was £82.50 It appeared to me that for agreed value from PJ I would need an independent valuation. I'll probably move to them next year. The small print with FJ is plentiful (22 sides of A4) and every aspect of the insurance is covered by different companies. They were not prepared to insure me without me taking the legal protection cover. Seems one size fits all. Cynically, I suspect the legal cover is their way of wriggling out of any claim by finding some loophole. " Oh sorry sir, you were riding when there was a Y in the month"

Peter James, only one photo of my Vincent & nothing for the other bikes. No inspection/report by an "expert" & very little paperwork. No milage restrictions. Legal cover/breakdown/european travel/recovery all included. The brokers [F.J.] get commission on all the extra cover they can sell so they push it as an extra.I have never insured with F.J. due to the complications involved in purchasing their cover & the expense of it.Derek F.

If they insist on charging for legal cover I'd tell them where to go, if anyone is in a trade union check as they might already provide it for you, I know ASLEF do. There's also a thing called an 'after the event policy' I didn't know about the union cover last year when I got knocked off my Triumph, Bennetts arranged for legal cover after the accident, costs £500 but if your the innocent party (as I was) costs you nothing, even if you are at fault £500 is a lot cheaper than paying legal costs, unless of course they only offer it to people who they know are not at fault !

Just sat down & had a good read through my Peter James documentation which took less than 10 minutes.Cover is fully comprehensive covering, Social/domestic/pleasure/commuting. Unlimited milage.Europewide cover/recovery.Also discovered the Laverda has agreed value of £3,000. Total agreed values is £32,500 which if my garage caught fire would ease the personal loss a bit.Excess is £50.00.As I say, I highly recommend this company.Derek F.

Hi allits official at stafford peter jones wants only £350 to insure a 69 commando, F1, commander, 2 of f1 sports, daytona 955i 147 bhp model, thunderbird 900, legend 900 with side car, in adittion loss of the side car is coverd with Fj its not.To be honnist he threw the ex police commander in for free but this is better than 1/2 price of fj for the lot. in addition you are coverd third party on any one elses bike (with the owners permition)it appeared to me that they whent on total value of the bikes to work the quote out, however you cant ride them all at once i suppose

Hi Richardi beilive bennits started this game saying you would not be insured over the mountain during tt week as its one way and un ristricted speed therfor a track not a road.however its only one way that changes for the tt, ride over solid white lines on the mountain and your nicked, you can still be done for dangerous driving and the points or ban appliy in the uk. whats worse bennits sponcer the ttTo be honist its the iddiots who crash every 5 minuits on the mountan getting it closed for nearly all of the tt. The two who passed me befor the gooseneck on the 50 limit (youtube vidio) would ave been nickd for speeding if it had not been 5am and no plod about , there was plod with guns at the higlander and the end of the sulby straight. i did not count the full size card board cuts of the manx officer with speed gunRegards Wayne

....... and FJ insisted I belong to a motorcycle club, any club, but didn't recognise this one. Nor could they offer me any alternate policy as the young lady said they specialise in classic insurance only. A bit of a brick wall.Fifty yards away, PJ were very helpful, gave me a price on the spot for unlimited mileage, any age 'borrowed' bike, no requirement for club membership, and other benefits I'll never use.

I'm with Carole Nash, and pay about £230 for the two rotaries.I'm paying extra for the F1 engined special, but it wouldn't hurt to try Peter james at renewal time. It's just a faff explaining the modifications.

Carol Nash were all the rage a few years ago for classic insurance. Then their prices went up once they were sold off. In steps FJ with good news for club members but funny old thing their prices are starting to creep up and the fine print is just too fine and too much. Can you imagine being knocked off your bike in France? one insurance company for the recovery, one for the overseas cover, one for the legal cover and finally one for the original cover in UK. Call me a cynic, but what's the chance of all that working towards a satisfactory result. Seems like KISS (Keep it simple, stupid) has gone out the window. I'll be riding like the Pope in France.

Urgh . . . insurance. The game plan is to collect premium dollars and then NOT pay claims. (Who would have guessed?)But did you know that insurance companies believe in God? Just read the policy - "blah blah blah no cover for Acts of God blah blah blah."I'm sure there's a lesson in there someplace, but I sure can't find it . . .Best RegardsFloridaMike

I've just renewed my bike insurance (sigh!) I guess I have been with Carole Nash for twenty years or more; I sometimes shop around but I've yet to beat Carole Nash for the whole package......that said, I certainly noticed it ......and didn't like it.....when the company changed hands. This year I tried Peter James, but for one modern (BMW R1150GS) and four classics Carole Nash still came out best...despite the fact that they count my Norton Rotary Classic as a 'modern' bike as it is post 1983...which rather surprised me.I have zero loyalty to insurance companies (with a possible exception for Carole Nash as their service does seem good) and would change in a heartbeat provided the difference in premium outweighed the hassle of changing........perhaps next year? Anyway i have just recived a email and its back what i was quoted at Staford.i suppose a 3 could be mistaken for a 5 when hand writen, if you get a differant figure to what you were quoted at stafford challenge it.

As my F1 sport had been in the dining room for the last 10 years, I had not made any changes to its' insured value. Now its' up and running again, I thought it best to up the value, especially as there is an F1 for sale at the moment at above £22,000. Carole Nash tell me the max value a post 1985 bike can have is £15,000. Could be a change to Peter Best at the renewal later this year.Anybody got an F1 insured, agreed value above £15K ?Regards, Terry.

15K seems a bit tight especially as a new Goldwing is twice that???Did you ask how in a couple of years time when it reaches Classic age it adds a third in value??I am with CN and have never had a problem but then again my bikes are all older except for the Classic which is not 15K.

Hi allAgreed value on most policy's say they can in the event of a claim have the bike re assessed and adjust the value you get accordingly, in the small print fj and pj both have this in the small print.Peter James almost doubled from £350 to £650 at the first renewal with no justification what so ever went back to FJ.What a bike is advertised at is immaterial its what they sell for that matters, and what the valuer such as bohnnams say in the event of a claim. My own bikes F1 18k, black sport 18k. blue f1 sport 20kregards Wayne
