Re: Voltage regulator

Hello there, a bit of advice please.I have an ammeter on my Commander and it says that after startup my battery is charging at more than 16 volts. I've checked this with a voltmeter and it is actually 17.1 volts. OK, not good and probably why I boil batteries! After about 10 miles, when I suppose the...

Re: Iridium Plugs

Well, I can only say that my Commander would regularly foul the RH plug (and only that one) in prolonged heavy traffic. I met an NGK man at a show, who said the Iridium plugs were designed as much as anything to counter plug fouling. Fitted them, never had a plug foul since. I change them every two ...

Re: OIL

I remember many years ago being told that oil is cheaper than metal, so always use the right oil and change it on time.My Commander had Comp 2 Premix as initial fill, and always has had it. Probably far from the cheapest and maybe no longer state of the art, but I'll stick with what I know.Nice to k...

Re: Putting your Rotary to bed for Winter.

Re: gerbing gloves.Well, if you ask me if I've crossed a continent in a monsoon, well, no. But I have ridden for 2-3 hours in the rain during the winter, many times. The gloves never leaked, which is a good thing since the linings are sheepskin, which if it got wet would take ages to dry. I never had...

Re: Putting your Rotary to bed for Winter.

All this is great but when I was riding regularly through winter, up to about 2 years ago, I found that heated grips didn't actually stop my hands getting cold because the backs of the fingers still froze but the palms and the insides roasted. So, I invested in a pair of Gerbing heated gloves. Ace! n...

Re: Voltage regulator

" My boat engine has an external 'intelligent' regulator to control the 70A alternator output. This initially displays 14.8 - 14.9 volts and gradually reduces to 12.7 as the battery becomes full. A voltage over 15.0 would cause me concern on any charging system. "Can I get one of these for...

Re: Tyres and Lights

I put the following on the forum back in September:I have to say I've now been using the bike so fitted and I can't ever see me going back to tungsten or halogen bulbs. Brilliant, recommended, pretty shockproof so long lasting and I can see why car manufacturers fit them. It's development, or evolut...

Re: Where was I ?

OK, I'll go for it.It's the Connell Bridge, once a rail-only bridge (till 1975, so well after Beeching) that was on the line from Connell and Oban to Ballachulish near Glencoe. At least, I think so.There you go, stuck my neck out...Ian

Re: Update on HID lights

Well, I can tell you what I did.On eBay I found a site in Slough, Easy-Driving, selling the Chinese HID kits for £46.99 and I bought one.Fitted to my Commander in about half an hour. Instructions useless but the wiring loom and diagram made it pretty clear and easy. The ballast, or inverter, lives i...

Re: Tyres and Lights

FWIW, I can only add my own experiences.1. I tried Avons, Continentals and Dunlops on my Commander (always in pairs) and when I fitted BT45 I knew this was the tyre for the bike. Stable, no white lining, good mileage. Never tried Cougars.2. Oil seals. As a general rule, lip seals like fork seals are...

I had mine half-inched a few years ago and did the right thing, reported it to Her Majesty's finest.I got a letter from them apologising that I was a victim of crime in their borough, a list of victim support groups, advice on seeking counselling and a guide to bereavement! Followed up by a letter f...

Re: Graham's anti-smoke kit

Hello Graham, and thanks for the reply. Yes, the post really is over a year old! I am still wankelling about smokily. One final question: on my Commander there is no auxilliary vacuum connection on either inlet pipe. Is there any other place I can connect the takeoff to or do I need to fit an IP2 inl...

Re: Are these typical pig ignorant americans? Surely not

I lived there for two years and sadly the average American knows of nothing outside the US borders. The bigger worry is the educated class. They KNOW there's nothing worth knowing outside the US and are the ones that always 'know best' and will, most likely, be the ones who won't amend the text. Won...

Re: Commander running temp and water additives

Hi there.Well, I can only say what mine is like. I've had mine since 1995 and it has always done like this: in normal use at this time of year the needle sits at 95. It doesn't need much provocation, like a red light, to rise rapidly to 105 with the fan running furiously. However, after half a mile ...

Graham's anti-smoke kit

Hello chaps.\r\rI have finally given in to SWMBO nagging about my smoky Commander and have bought all the bits to stop this from the very nice man in Hunslet. I have no doubt it will do the job. My query is about fitting it.\r\rMy Commander is running very well and the engine is still in the frame. ...
