Re: Pale Grey Powder Coating
Hi John, happily for me, because this bike has had so little use, the wheels are still pretty good, but there are these few marks I'd like to deal with as powder coat is notorious for deteriorating if it's breached, prevention being better than a cure. If push comes to shove I will look for a paint ...

Pale Grey Powder Coating
The wheels on my Classic are a sort of pale battleship grey.....and yet, they look silver in the brochure photos. I don't intend to change anything as it's the original finish and removing powder coat (ghastly stuff evil ) is no small task. That said, there are a couple of chips here and there which...

Re: Norton Rotary Classic (BSA) on ebay
I suspect they have taken a few things at face value........I was briefly in discussion with the person who was selling this bike on behalf of the widow of the deceased owner; a very decent sort who had stepped up to assist the lady in the disposal of her husband's bikes .......but I would not have ...

Norton Rotary Classic (BSA) on ebay
The 'BSA' Norton Rotary Classic (#44) has found it's way onto ebay. I think they could have done it a large favour if they had removed the wingrack and re fitted the original rear lights and seat valances. They don't even mention the original parts are available with the bike..which I would have tho...

Re: Low Head Allen Bolts
There are a few odd threads in the mix too......the vast majority of threaded parts on the Classic appear to be metric ......... but there are a number of parts where a UNF thread is shown. The rear torque arm, for instance, has a UNF threaded bolt at the front end and a metric one at the other end ...

Re: Low Head Allen Bolts
You would imagine there must be a reason, surely they wouldn't go to the trouble of using specific (odd) bolts with alloy spacers without a good reason, .........would they? That was what stopped me from just replacing them, in case I'd missed the bleedin' obvious......I think I'll turn the heads do...

Re: Low Head Allen Bolts
Thank you for that Richard.........as it happens I was planning on replacing them with stainless and getting all the originals bright zinc plated as soon as I have enough to justify a trip to the platers. I assumed (which is always fatal) that the smaller hex in the upper bolts might relate to reduc...

Low Head Allen Bolts
Tinkering with my Classic today, I removed the upper and lower steering yoke clamp bolts. They are a bit of an oddity; the cap head of the bolt has a reduced height......(low head) about half the height of a typical Allen head, and underneath this reduced height head in each case is an aluminium spa...

Re: Cast Iron Discs
Will do, I'm going to try Allbike Engineering first, they are set up to make discs and claim they will make pretty much anything.
I guess when these parts were not made in-house, Norton were always at the mercy of their suppliers.
Mick.

Re: Cast Iron Discs
Thank you for that, Richard.......it seems this was an 'unlucky' bike.......it definitely has the spacer ring you mention. I will certainly look at EBC; failing that, because they look relatively uncomplicated, I will see what All Bike Engineering can do; I was hoping there might be a straightforwar...

Re: Cast Iron Discs
A whack with a rubber mallet is the traditional cure.......but thinking about it, these are opposed piston, the caliper body is fixed in place, so whacking it won't do anything.......it might break something if I got a bit carried away though. Stainless discs is definitely the way to go ......... if...

Re: Cast Iron Discs
Thanks John, looking at the discs a little closer today, the cast rotor seems to be mounted on an alloy centre fastened by Allen bolts. The actual disc part seems to be a simple circle with a number of threaded holes, no complicated shapes......in an ideal world I would buy discs and bolt them to my...

Re: Cast Iron Discs
Chrome plated discs........that's another mystery, there must have been a good reason, it's not a cheap process. I did wonder if the Classic discs are unique to that bike or if anything else might fit, but I suspect I'm one of an extremely tiny number to have the problem so I will have to find out m...

Re: Cast Iron Discs
But, given the right pads they do work in the wet, even bikes from the seventies.....and that's the whole point really, all modern bikes (I stand to be corrected) have stainless, low maintenance discs and stunning brakes. I had a bit of a struggle to get the bike off the bench yesterday because the ...

t Hi all, when I picked up my Classic on Wednesday I had to load it onto the trailer in light rain, I stopped a few miles down the road just to check the straps and the brake discs were already red rust. exclaim Having put it in the garage and dried it off, I went to take it out today and the pads h...

Back in 2013 I sold my Norton Rotary Classic LE066......having had a succession of RE5s and a DKW as well.......about six months later I had a few pangs of regret about the Norton and as time went on the regrets got a bit stronger until I started to bug the new owner (who is a top bloke incidentally...

Unfortunately I no longer have my W2000 and the various manuals went with it. Re: Flat Battery mystery
Here is an update, I have been through the wiring harness reasonably thoroughly, whilst doing so I had the meter connected and it showed a drain of 0.9 which is vastly greater than the 0.03 I started with originally. I did find, as I had the headlight out to access the large harness plugs to the ins...

Hello Mick,If your still having problems with your bike I'd be happy to run parallel tests on my Classic with you over the phone or I could pop over to you as you aren't too far from me in Essex. Hi Howell, thank you for that, much appreciated, however I really do wish I could read and understand the scale on the meter....every reference I have found thus far assumes basic knowledge that I dont have so I have no idea if I'm reading it correctly or not.The fused DCA scale on my meter runs fro...

Re: Flat Battery mystery
Hi John, thank you for that.....well if that is true that there is a permanent 'live' element then I guess some sort of draw should be expected, but for the life of me, in the absence of a clock or computer etc I can't imagine what would do this. The other thing that bugs me is that it hasn't done th...

Re: Flat Battery mystery
Hi Richard, many thanks for that....my meter is seemingly vastly cleverer than I am...the fused DCA scale runs from 200u (200 microamps?) through 2m, (2 milliamps?) 20m, 200m, 2 (Amps?) up to 20u/10. There is also an unfused 10A option in a seperate port.Assuming the settings run from low to high as...

Thank you for that, my knowledge of vehicle electrics is so basic that I have no idea whether a discharge rate of -0.03 on the 20u/10 DC Amps scale is normal, reasonable or totally unacceptable...as I haven't a clue what 20u/10 really means. I looked on t'interweb before asking here, but pretty much...

Flat Battery mystery
Bit of a shock this afternoon, the previously superb AGM battery on my Classic was near flat for no aparrent reason; a bump start got her running and after a few miles the electric start etc was back in service so no problems with the charging system. I am an epic dullwit when it comes to electrics ...
