Re: Comander rear brake noise
Ran the bike on bench yesterday with a helper for throttle control. At approx 20-35mph (off rev counter), brake applied by hand, noise was accompanied by vibration of the calliper and its carrier. It was vibrating against the torque arm rear rubber bush. Fitted anti vibration clips collected from lo...

Re: Comander rear brake noise
Thanks JB and RIt still had the original JA pan pads, no sign of anti rattle whatsits so that is likely suspect, I assume they are a Yamaha part???Thanks for the tip.The new Dunlopads do not mention or come with Anti rattle springs but I am tossing them out because of there relatively small swept ar...

Comander rear brake noise
My Commander suffers a minor grinding noise on rear brake. Resurfaced the disc and fitted the recommended Dunlopad gg. Noise much worse. The DP pad does not sweep any where near the swept area of the disc which I find strange.Any suggestions on differing pad experience would be appreciated.Roger in ...

Re: Knocking Forks
Yes Mike, loose stearing head bearings is more of a "clunk" that is felt as much as heard. I agree, your description of a "knock' with no feel to it is more likely to be fork internals related. Head race adjustment checking is just one diagnostic action.Roger

Re: Knocking Forks
I have found "fork knock" on several occasions is in fact slightly slack head race bearings. The latest case was my IP2, I had fitted new bearings but lower one was not fully home in its housing. First time brake was applied it went the last few thou (can I say that these days over there?)...

Re: Thermo Fan Switch
Care would be required to ensure that the fan does not impeed air flow while on the move. Other than that any fan on a air cooled engine will do a super job. However, on My IP2 the temp reading slowly drops while engine is at a slow idle below 75f. The Commander goes up at idle as the fan can not co...

Thanks for that. Spotted the one you mention but no temp detail mentioned on web site. However just located one in Texas. BMW part number 61311364272. It is 91 degrees instead of the Norton OE one of 95c, it will be here in three days. $17.95 including new washer.Roger

Re: commander fuel consumption MPG
Just returned from a weeks tour of the Olympic peninsular and the Cascade range on the Commander. 936 miles, best mpg 44, lowest while haring across the tumble weed stretches 38, average for trip 41.5 on the anaemic US gallon. Silkoleen elixir consumed 2.5 pints after returning 1.25 pints from the c...

Re: commander fuel consumption MPG
While on the subject. My commander fuel tank is claimed to hold 6US gallons. From brim full to running out is 4.8 to 4.9 gallons tops. Draining everthing out and filling to brim it takes 5.5 gallons. So at run dry there is over half a gallon none useable in left side. The vacuam operated fuel tap is ...

Re: commander fuel consumption MPG
Yesterday I rode the Commander to Wala Wala for some sweet onions (Google it)192 miles each way on superb very rural two laners and a bit of duel carriageway. Temps 85 to 95 in old money as we never got sucked into the metric standardisation. First tank full 180 miles took 4.68 gallons (US) to refil...

Re: commander fuel consumption MPG
My Commander did 43 mpg on its first 600 mile round trip after the usual engine work. It was however running weak at low throttle openings due to a air leak at the plenum box to right carb manifold joint. After curing that, mpg fell to 39. Despite very careful carb setting it was running a little ri...

Re: IP2 wiggle on
Most interesting about your experience with the Shinko. I have read similar good reports on the make over here. The front end shake on my Commander drove me nuts. Although Verboten over your side the Michelin radial cured the issue and it is permissible over here. Intersting comparing tyre prices th...

Re: IP2 wiggle on
As I see it, the infinitesimal risk of losing control after a sudden blow out with tubeless tyres on tube type rims is the same as running tubes in the same rims. Both can fall into the well of the rim. When was the last time you had a side wall blow out without warning? It can happen with very old t...

Re: IP2 wiggle on
I found that a Michlin radial on the front of the Commander worked wonders.Ran a 76 Guzzi with Lester cast ally tubed type wheels on tubeless Bridgstones for yonks. The small ridge on tubeless spec wheels is a DOT safety requirement to keep the tyre in place in the event of a blow out. It has nothin...

Re: top speed of IP2?
My ex MOD IP2 engine is no where as sharp as my Commander. Both are geared about the same 3700 revs at 60mph. The IP2 on that gearing will top out at about 100 in fifth while the Commander will keep on trucking well past that. Top speed aside, for the wide open spaces over here the Commander could d...

Re: top speed of IP2?

No tyre mix laws over here in the land of the free of any sort but loads of free advice and old wives tales saying it should not be done. Re: top speed of IP2?
Hello chaps from the Pacific NW.Re the excellent tyre choice advice from Richard. My experience with my Commander and IP2 is that both were originally lacking in the handling dept.
