Bonneville, anyone ?

Having been away for a while, I'm surprised not to find any comment on here of the NRV at Bonneville. It may be a new unofficial record for a rotary-powered motorcycle - but only 9 mph faster than MCN claim for a bog-standard CBR600RR ? Most disappointing when compared to the speeds clocked by the R...

Re: oil

"is it worth the extra cost"?. I don't do a lot of miles on my Commander (only 3,400 since March) and intend keeping it until unable to ride it any more. It rolled off the side stand recently and I had to have help picking it up again so it may morph into a naked bike in a few years' time...

Re: oil

why are we advised to use comp 2 premix as opposed to injector oil when the engines are supplied by a pump? Hi Steve,I was always lead to believe that 'injector' oils had a % of dilutant to allow them to flow more easily under gravity from tank to pump on two-strokes. This dilutant vaporised at a l...

These are the type used by Ducati and are made of rubber with a threaded insert, what does anyone think or has anyoned used these fittings before and can comment on their strength. Re: F1 Sport for sale

Hi Wayne,The bike is genuine and the quoted history is correct; the recorded mileage is probably correct too. NML rebuilt it on behalf of its second owner, who did a few hundred miles and then decided it wasn't what he really wanted and bought an IP2 to modify instead.NML advertised it on the web s...

as it is a synthetic oil, does the oil system have to be flushed or is silkolene fully miscible with Rotella? Re: Timing and Balancing

Hi Malc,Did you notice any reduction in seal sticking or end plate scoring when Comp 2 was introduced ? The simple smoke test for oils at Shenstone showed that it vaporised at a higher temperature than Rotella and left less of a residue.Mid-West did the same sort of tests and intially only approved...

Re: Timing and Balancing

Ypu shouldn't tell me things like that red face It was actually one of the recognised ways of determining whether an IP2 engine was suffering pre-ignition when used very hard.Firstly, the engine starts to sound harsh, the temperature gauge rises rapidly - and then it doesn't stop when switched off....

Re: Timing and Balancing

My personal opinion of course, but I think that if synthetic oils such as Comp 2 had been specified for the IP2 from the beginning, then many of the engine problems would have been avoided. Failures due to seal sticking may have been reduced, but there would still have been the whole list of other t...

an option of using a spare rotor that may be a better fit on a shaft. Malc That's a whole new discussion !Shafts, and particularly air-cooled, tend to grow at the eccentrics during use and reduce the rotor bearing clearance below the accepted norm. Re: Timing and Balancing

I must admit that I've never done any practical tests myself to determine what is a maximum acceptable out-of-balance value before engine vibration becomes a problem to the rider (or to the main bearings).Aero engines used to be balanced to a wider tolerance as it was felt that vibration from the p...

Make the back of the tank narrower, and the seat to match ! Have a look at '1010' (ex-Norton development bike) updated by Reuben F. and now owned by Frank W. A skilled bit of panel beating at a standard IP2 tank makes it narrower and much more comfortable to ride.R.

Hi NightStalker,The originals fitted by Mitchenall were alloy. Steel ones may be stronger and less prone to stripping the thread in use, but take more load to set and can crack the grp.Originals were countersunk type by the way.R.

Congratulations !All you need now to complete the job is to get the hot idle speed down to around 600rpm (which is almost off the bottom end of the tacho scale). After starting from cold, and with the choke returned to the normal riding position, it should fast-idle at around 12-1400rpm.
