Re: IP2 losing power
The carbs have been off and are now clean inside and out, they weren't particularly dirty and there wasn't a great deal of deposit in the damper chambers when I initially cleaned them. The slides are free top to bottom. Tonights test ride reveals little difference, a bit of misfiring, initially pull...

Re: IP2 losing power
I've gripped the inside of the damper rod with my smaller bore measuring gauge and both slides move up and down freely. Curiouser and curiouser.

Re: IP2 losing power
That thought had crossed my mind. I was meticulous in cleaning the flange and the piston does lift when not on the carb. That's my main line of attack. I might buy one of those ultrasonic cleaners and give the carb parts a "bath" I'm guessing that a lighter oil in the dashpots would allow ...

Re: IP2 losing power
It's marginally better but still refuses to pull strongly. I didn't remove the carbs but did clean and oil the damper with 20:50 which is what was in there before. It starts easily the tick over is steady and there is good fuel flow to the carbs. The Ignition trigger was loose and the flywheel was s...

Re: IP2 losing power
May have got to the bottom of it, as you know, most carb problems are electrical. My ignition trigger has mysteriously moved and is contacting the flywheel. Probably ok but the poor little thing can only take a certain amount of hammering before giving up the ghost. I'll get back to you all with the...

Re: Price of commander
I think that because the great unwashed know very little about Wankel engines apart from the " Oh yeah they wear out their rotor tips seals don't they" most will avoid going near them unless they specifically want one. That makes the potential buyer pool quite small. Most of them are becom...

IP2 losing power
I cleaned the vacuum chambers of my IP2 out and re-assembled them prior to the NOC Devon Rally and gave it a bit of a polish and now it is a sick little puppy. (Didn't make it to Devon) It starts and runs and the tick over drops back when warm but it is reluctant to pull above about 3000rpm. Working...

Re: petrol tap vacuum pipe
My hard nylon vacuum pipe popped out of the rubber fitting on the inlet manifold and then melted itself to death on the engine. This was coming off the ferry in Dublin for the NW200. Made life pretty tedious through the city centre with a high tick over and a very hot engine. I carry a spare and a s...

Re: Surging Commander
The air adjustment screws only control the mixture and flow at tick over because the throttle butterflies are supposed to be fully closed then. Once the throttle starts to open then the bypass bleed is redundant. The screws on the body of the carb control the height of the main jet and hence the mix...

IP2 harness routing
I'm trying to free up an inch or so of extra play in the after-market wiring harness on my IP2. At present the main harness runs along the LH side of the spine and below the petrol tank mount. Things are a bit stretched on full RH lock. It's a tight squeeze under there but I'm going to try and route...

Re: Draining commander fuel tank?!?
There is a capped threaded boss on the LH side of a IP2 tank. It's well worth fitting a tap to it (Graham Wilshaw sells them) this gives you access to that amount of fuel. Using that fuel every now and then prevents water collecting in that previously innaccessable part of the tank and rotting the b...

Koni Rebuild
After waiting for Hagon to not let me know that there would be a 3-4 week wait for IP2 rear units I have decided to rebuild my Koni units. Norman Hyde is the dealer for Ikon parts (which are what motorcycle Konis have become) and can supply seal kits for around £20+vat &p&p. It looks like a ...

Re: tick over problems
You may find your strange tickover problems are caused by a air leak in the induction pipe from carb to engine. In my case, an engine that would start reasonably and then increase in speed to tickover at 2000rpm was caused by the thin vacuum pipe that sucks the petrol tap open. It had become displac...

Re: Frame restoration.
I would be suprised if soda blasting will be up to the job of removing the paint or rust but give it a try. My Commander was rotten as a pear along the sides of the seat cantelever. Welding new side cheeks fixed that. The water/mud trap at the top damper mounts needs particular attention as does the...

North West 200
Just got back from the NW200 and apart from one of those new fangled 961 Commandos, I think I can safely say I was the token Norton rider there. Riding a Rotary over there was like being in some kind of freak show and it amused my Son no end when punters were telling me how "they all wear their...

Re: MPG?
The reason you can get 60MPG out of your Kawasaki is that it is a modern lean burn engine with four valves per cylinder, digital fuel injection that probably cuts the fuel off on the over-run, and it probably weighs half of what the Norton does. Try pumping your tyres up to 40 psi.

Re: MPG?
I work on 42 MPG on my IP2. Doesn't seem to vary much whatever you do to it. My old Commander was pretty slippery but that's the benefit of a full fairing.

Re: IP2 Sprag clutch change
Thanks for the advice on the sprag Richard. I Loctited my nuts (as you do) when I rebuilt the motor a couple of years ago. I'm tempted to use a bit of (very) local heat to persuade the nuts off without too much of a fight. Your thoughts on this Richard?

IP2 Sprag clutch change
Or should it be sprague? anyway, It's a 50/50 if my IP 2 will start without having to push it forward in gear to find a bit of bite for the starter. The question is, whilst I took the precaution of buying a new sprag direct from the manufacturer, am I likely to find the surfaces that it runs against...

Just think how many quality maps you could buy for the same money. most smart phones have a google nav facility to fine tune to individual addresses/postcodes. Any way real men don't get lost (they may be temporarily unsure of their position)

Re: Recommendation for Electronic Ignition
I can recommend Startright's digital ignition and it should fit as a direct replacement. I had to do some rewiring to fit to an IP2 but it was worth it. I sent it back to the guy who makes them for testing when I had a problem. He ran it for 24 hours "no fault found," turned out to be the ...

Re: IP2 Rearsets
My brake pedal already has a rearward extension to the foot pad and the gear pedal is a modified Commando item, again shorter than the IP item. With the IP2 footrests swung to the rearward most setting, the footrest fouls the brake lever (wonder how that got past health and safety…….. suppose it was...

I would like to move my footrests back to about where they would be at the rearmost setting on the serrations. The problem is that I've only got little feet and the brake and gear pedals would then be about 2" (50.8mm Very Happy ) forward of my toes. has anybody made a decent pair of rear sets ...

You may consider scalding hot water and washing up liquid and a bottle brush followed by a hose/pressure washer.
