Hello Ed,
Item 12 is one of two vacuum take off screw in plugs. They are exactly the same as the ones fitted to the other Norton rotaries.
John.

Re: carbon removal
John,There is no easy way to remove the carbon build up other than lots of elbow grease. It always is a long, filthy, ball aching job.As far as the rotors go though, you could try leaving them submerged in a reasonably strong caustic soda solution.First thing is to remove the bearings by taking out ...

Re: cush drive
John, the parts book is correct! There are 15 rubbers in all of the Norton clutches and all of one size. The replacement rubbers you have are the correct ones and the ones fitted originally would have been exactly the same. After being mangled in your cush drive assembly for the last 60K miles, it is ...

Re: allan screws
You are right that the gear cluster was originally Triumph, though I'm not sure if the Norton type clutch was used by Triumph. To my knowledge, Norton used at least four different mainshafts. All had the same clutch. That's discounting the F1 of course.

Re: allan screws
You are right John, putting in new rubbers is far from straightforward.......It's a bit "quart into a pint pot" type of job where the new rubbers seem to be a lot bigger than the old ones. The first one will go in easy and so will the next one. It is fitting the third rubber that is a chall...

Re: allan screws
A tricky one that John!It might be worth asking Andover Norton the cost of a replacement? What is the condition of the clutch plate grooves? If worn badly, a new one would be a good option.Other than that, do you have a friendly machine shop locally who would remove the remains of the screws? If you c...

John,Turn the assembly over and tap the internally splined boss with a soft hammer. That should push off the plate.Hope that works.

Re: allan screws
John, I presume you mean the countersunk screws removed with a 3mm key.Give them a tap first with a brass drift and hammer after some heat, then using a centre punch, as far from the centre of each screw as possible, "drift" the screws anticlockwise. That's how I usually get them out.

It might be a good idea to disconnect the fuel tap vacuum pipe and let the motor burn off all the fuel left in the float bowls.

I wouldn't worry too much about the tensioner assembly. By the time you've removed the assy from the engine, it'll fall apart anyway, along with oil...To put it all back together, push the lower piston / spring into the body, squirt some oilin to the top hole before fitting the top piston. Judge the...

Re: cush drive
John,I can't remember where the clutch components came from (maybe Commando?), but if your hub needs replacing, I wouldn't let the age of the hubs Andover Norton have, be of any concern. Last forever in a parts bin!Have you stripped the clutch assembly already, to see what's worn? Some of the "...

Commander / F1& F1 Sport generators can be obtained from Graham and I imagine from Yamaha dealers. The generator fitted to the Classic and Interpol is not the same as the one fitted to the above. Try Graham for either.

I'm not sure if any other bikes have the same size spline as the Interpol / Classic, but the Commander / F1 / F1 Sport, have the std 10mm Japanese type spline. The Commander one is interchangeable with the Interpol / Classic type.

Re: Help . My F1 has died...
As the others have said, your engine seems to have "flooded" with fuel.Remove the plugs but before you put some new ones in, leave the bike for a day or so to let the excess fuel evaporateout of the motor.Good luck.

Yes, the end plate(s) can be checked with a endoscope.Conceivably though, there could be damage to any of the plates.Hope you find no damage!

John, Sorry to say, it sounds very much like you have a "smeared" left hand end plate. It might be a good idea not to run it any further until an internal check has been made. The LH end plate can beremoved without removing the engine, after pulling the flywheel off first.I hope I'm wrong.....

Re: IOM issues with Rotary Norton when hot?
Hello David,I can't quite make out what sort of Norton rotary your cafe racer is, ie Classic / Interpol or Commander based, butit seems likely from the number of petrol stations you visited, that the engine is running very rich! In fact it sounds like it is flooding. A faulty fuel tap can cause floo...

John,I'm sorry you are still having trouble. When you say you checked your temperature gauge by using a different type, where did you pick up the value from? Re: cooling probs.
What is your oil consumption like? Perhaps a bit lean?I've always felt that the air, the air cooled engines take in is somewhat restricted by the closeness of the coil cover, and coils, and two thick filters.I binned one of my filters years ago, and also removed the powder coating from both housings.

I can't add much to what has already been suggested, but it is worth spending time making absolutely sure the plates are flat ie on glass. A few thou' can cause trouble. When you refit the spring (in it's compressed state), make sure it spins concentrically within the clutch drum after refitting the ...
