Re: Classic Petrol Tap
Thank you Richard for the interesting info concerning the lever plate, restricting the tap to only 'on' or 'reserve', both controlled by the vacuum fuel valve. I have only once run out of petrol when in the IoM, coasted to the side of the road, less than 5 mins to switch to reserve and away again, I...

John/Geoff,
I hope I am not tempting fate but I have not experienced any issues with the fuel tap, either leaking or the issues of the carbs drying out
Perhaps I have just been lucky

Re: Reclaiming rotary engine components.
Roger, I find that the Norton Rotary Enthusiasts FB page is interesting, but mainly for those interested in the racing bikes and owners of F1's, that said there are some post concerning the non sports bikes. The Rotary Owners Club is an excellent source of information on the Norton rotary's i.e. Cla...

Norton Rotary New Rear Chain Gaiters
Its thanks to Chris Harvey’s hard work that I now have two brand new rear chain gaiters. This means that I will be able to keep my Commander on the road for the foreseeable future, these bikes are not designed to be used without the gaiters as they provide an oil bath and subsequently the lubricatio...

The oil must be low ash, I use Castrol Tection DD40, Shell Rotella 40 is recommended, some Rotary owners use a Silkolene oil
I suspect if Morris straight 40 Golden Film was used it would carbon up very quickly

Re: Oil pipes and engine removal
Roy, Assuming your air cooled is similar to my Commander, could the oil leak be from the centre plate? The centre plate on My Commander had a plug in the tapped hole, if the air cooled are the same could your plug have been removed or dropped out? To remove the engine is not a big job on my Commande...

Funny little ways
This may be of interest to some Commander owners. Having owned and greatly enjoyed my Commander for a number of years I have found that after a winter layup and the first run of the year the bike is just not happy until it’s covered around 100 miles, this may be owing to the way I lubricate the roto...

Mick, The seal I use from Ferriers' is a 2 part seal, stationary part carbon face rotating part ceramic face I'm assuming you have the pump on your bench and have fitted new bearings and a new lip seal. Ensuring everything is clean, fit the stationary part into the pump housing using a good quality ...

Holger, I attend the IoM TT every other year always riding my Commander and have yet to see another Norton Rotary during my stay on the island, it would be good though to meet up with other Rotarian's. "Cold running" I don't think applies to my old girl, she runs at just under 100c
There is a difference between cooling water temperature and exhaust gas temperature, anyway let us know how you get on with the new plugs.

Re: spark plugs
John, I use NGK C8E and CR8E My Commander NS (left hand side) plug oils up if I'm stuck in slow moving traffic for a long time, reason is that the NS side sucks oil from the plenum chamber and the centre plate, when running at normal speeds I do not have a problem with plugs. The OS (right hand side...

There are modifications detailed on this forum whereby a relay is used with additional direct connections ...

David,
I agree, however I feel the Boyer gives a more even tick over, I have been told that the Boyer and Mini Mag use a different retard setting, that said the Mini Mag is good system.
All I have to do now is save up for a new one to carry as a spare.

Re: Boyer ignition
Richard, Thank you for your post, being encapsulated makes getting at the components within the Boyer difficult if not impossible. Its a shame as the Boyer is a good unit but as Boyer no longer make them the labour cost even if they were interested would probably be greater than a new Mini Mag. If I...
