Re: engine oil & frame number

Hi, my bike is number 4296, and was registered mid 1994, so yours sounds about right, as to the water pump, Richard rebuilt mine about 2 years ago, and i believe there is a mod he does, because a seal is not now obtainable, look thro some of the previous posts, im sure theres something on the site r...

Second petrol tap on Commander?

Hi, has anyone fitted a normal gravity feed petrol tap on the other side to the original vacuum one? I have done a forum search and see that there were two taps fitted to some early Interpols, but the second tap was done away with due to being left on and flooding the engine, but my thinking is to u...

Re: Coolant Capacity Commander

Hi Tony, i've just done mine, i used Halfords blue coolant, (pre 98 vehicles coolant ), i have used just under 2 litres of it in a 50/50 mix, so capacity must be around 4 litres, i just drained it via the drain plug under the pump case, and flushed it thro a few times, (i had the red type in previou...

Re: Commander wont keep running

Hi, had the same problem, (see previous post) only ran with starter button pressed, and was the ballast resister gone, as mentioned can be proved by directly connecting wires together, mine now housed behind screen in fairing, dave

Petrol tap blocked?

My Commander does not appear to be getting any petrol from the tap, or at best an intermittant flow, i have tried sucking on the vacuum pipe, but this does not appear to improve anything. does anyone know if both the MAIN and RESERVE position work off the vacuum, or does the Reserve position work on...

Re: Digital voltmeter

Hi Derek, i checked mine today, and at revs above 2000 rpm, mine is reading 14.1 v with nothing on, and drops to 13.8v with lights, and 13. 2 v with lights and grips on, I would have thought that around 13.2 would be the very minimum needed to put any charge back into the battery, mine is connected ...

Re: Digital voltmeter

Hi , i recently posted regarding my Commander not charging properly, the two replacement regulaters i fitted (one was to small, so was changed for a larger output one by the supplier) both only had a single red wire fitted, but when you look at the two wires fitted to the loom, they are connected to...

Re: Exhaust & RR unit

I recently purchased a unit from them for my commander, it was the RR10 as advertised for the Commander on their website, but when fitted it was only putting out around 12.5 volts, i spoke to them on several occasions and was given various things to try/check. but after speaking to one of their tech...

Re: regulater/ rectifier wires

Thanks to all of you for replying, special thanks to john for the offer of the wiring diagrams, i believe the ones i have are for the air, and watercooled commanders, but i also would not have a clue how to put them onto the site. I have been playing a bit more with the bike today, but not sure what ...

Re: regulater/ rectifier wires

Thanks to you both for taking the time to reply, i have found a wiring diagram, which allthough hard to read appears to show, that of the 4 brown and white wires (what i thought were 2 is actually 4, onto two connectors ), one goes to the 30 amp auxiliary fuse, one goes to the starter relay, and the...

regulater/ rectifier wires

Hi, finally got around to trying to fit a new regulater/ rectifier today, however the new universal one only has 1 red wire, so i assume i can either join the two brown/ white wires on the bike that connect to it, together, or just use one of the brown/white wires and insulate the other as dead, ( t...

Re: Only runs with starter pressed??

Thanks to all who replied, and it does appear to be the resistor, i can connect the 2 wires together and it runs ok, i do intend to extend the wires and put a new one in the fairing, also may replace the regulater/rectifier while im at it due to slight overcharging, ( previous post ) however various...

Only runs with starter pressed??

Sounds odd, but my Commander will only run while the starter is pressed, its been stood for around 2 months or more waiting for new batterys, but i fitted them today, ( see previous posting, in the end i went for the two as original, after talking to the shop owner, as to the differences between lea...

Single battery on Commander ?

Is it ok to put just one battery on a Commander and then just tape up or remove the battery wires for the 2nd one ?, would this affect the regulater in any way?, just thinking i may buy one modern gel type, as a replacement for the two lead acid ones, thanks dave

Re: FAST IDLE

Regarding the clutch lever, is the standard one off of a xj900,? ? the rotary clutch appears to operate like a trident one, and they have the same problems on some bikes, and different people have tried various ways of getting extra lift, including changing the angle of the operating ramps, on mine ...

OOPS! alternator wires ?

Further to my previous post, my aternator block connecter wires had burnt through, (3 yellow wires, in plastic connecter, left hand side, ) so i stripped them back and put new lengths of wire in, however during the work, marks i had put on the wires to identify which connected to which came off, is ...

Thanks for your replies, i have only just found time to have a look at the bike, the wires on the regulator were on the one bolt, and although they looked clean i did remove and clean them up, however on checking the 3 wire connector Richard mentioned, it has got the covers burnt through on the two ...

Voltage regulator

Hi, whats the maximum volts that should be measured at the battery terminals with the engine running, on putting a meter on the battery on my commander i get a reading of around 15 volts at tickover(lights off), and 15 volts at higher revs with all lights on, is this a bit high? my manual shows 13-1...

Re: Batteries for the Commander

Hi, sorry to use an old link, but having had the batterys on my commander fail several time over the years, and allways having to buy a pair at the same time, would it be possible to just disconnect one of the originals and tape up the leads and run on just one?, maybe leaving the other one in place...
