Re: Norton now by TVS Motors India

So who gets the share out of the 20 million ? Does this resolve the pension scam issues etc ? Does it bail S. Garner out ? Good luck to TVS, but the 'new' Royal Enfield big twins, as good as they are said to be, not over priced like the Donnington Nortons, simply haven't been taken up on a large sca...

Re: The Norton affair

Thanks for posting this article David, it's an almost unbelievable story. Tragic for the private and business people who are vastly out of pocket due to this maverick operation. I almost wish it's all a huge misunderstanding. The full facts will out, eventually. A great shame for the name and histor...

Re: F1 thirst

Bit of an overlap with JB's post, so Commanders do clear 40mpg on SU's. I have to wonder if the issue with F1's is that the Mikunis are in a poor location, in enclosed bodywork that became known for overheating. Perhaps in a hotter climate (where in France is the bike ?) there is a need for bigger t...

Re: F1 thirst

I can concur with Wayne, my F1 Sport is also pretty good on fuel considering the reputation rotaries have. I don't go loony anymore but it certainly does a good 40 mpg. The reason ? F1 sports don't have the Mikunis of the F1, they have SU's, can't beat'em. ! Just my opinion, had cars with SU's from ...

Re: F1 thirst

Yep, that's around 16 MPG ! Sadly, no-one is telepathic, without the bike or any facts about what was done to it last, what (if any ) mods have been done, the sort of use etc it gets and who maintains it, one can only guess. Clogged air filters, high fuel levels, sticking choke system, dragging brak...

Re: The Norton affair

That is absolutely staggering. I went on a factory visit 2 years ago with a group of Police bikers, on the way back we discussed how big the site was, the impressive buildings and the vast overheads and wondered how, what appeared to be 2 bikes a week ,could fund it. There's the answer. When I bough...

Re: Norton F1 Sport Seat

Hello Holger, Re the new Nortons and Stuart Garner, they went bust last week, insolvent, maybe even criminal proceedings from what's said in the news. That source of parts is no more. I agree the F1 Sport seat is a bit basic. I intend gluing a thicker/wider high density foam to mine but it's a job I...

Re: Water cooling

Hello John, somewhere, previously, I have read that the water must not flow too fast through the cooling fins as said fins do not have time to absorb the heat from the water. I intended to fit a thermostat with a bigger through-way in my Citroen DS ( the seventies one ),believing more must be better...

That's it, the sound and the way torque is delivered and the crackle as you 'blip' and change down, nothing else like it. The fact she's electric start is a huge bonus. My little Triumph twin is kick but , luckily, an easy starter.
As is said, keep on 'truckin !

Re: Norton F1 Sport failure left side

Hello Holger, My F1 Sport failed on a ride out a year ago. No obvious problems with fuel supply or sparks. The AA man was baffled. When I stripped the carbs off to put new O rings in ( just to make the carbs perfect), I found that the metal air box that the carbs bolt onto, was distorted badly, caus...

Re: glow plugs

As a guess, a safety precaution. I believe glow plugs use around 2 or 300 amps, outside the engine that could easily create a spark igniting fuel (if there was a leak ) or finger burns.

F1 Sport seat unit

The foam pad on my Sport seat is quite tiny, nowhere near as wide as the seat area itself. It's around 1" thick so I find it quite uncomfortable as the two sides are a distinct edge. So, question is: is it an original and why so small ?, or, is there an improved version ? If not a special shape...

It's a cheaper rate simply because you're not doing road miles. I have 4 bikes on laid up and it saved quite a bit, more to spend on maintenance etc !

Hi John, A point just made to me via the MIB, who wrote to say I had an uninsured vehicle. In fact, it was insured with all the rest of the fleet, but, I had asked for laid up cover with the one I don't use, 0 miles on the policy schedule. The MIB take that to mean it is not insured for the road alt...

I think you're maybe referring to what became known as the "Vimuk" agreement. Something like having to insure all vehicles even if they're locked up, unmoveable etc.....

Not sure of the Vimuk spelling

On the Car and Classic site, an F1 Sport/TT described as the holy grail of motorcycles and comparing one with a Vincent A series twin. He clearly knows nothing about those A twins. A different world altogether . Asking 50,000. Cloud cuckoo land I think.

Re: S.U Carb jetting

SU's aren't a carb full of jets. Just one which is almost always a 0.8". To change fuelling is a case of changing needles, a real minefield ! Stick to the stuff in there and see how it runs once the idle mixture is correctly set. Acceleration and top revs can be affected by changes to the sprin...

I assumed the club experts would chime in, so a delay before I responded : Use 5wt oil, 7.5 OK if you like quite firm forks. Forget quantities,( but expect to use around 400 to 450cc per leg), the air gap is more important , anywhere from 120 mm to 150 mm works but 130 is an ideal . 120 stiffer, 150...
