Yes John, I'm THAT Ian!Just let me have it back when you're done with it. My Commander is now tucked up for winter and was showing no need for a clutch tool when it went to bed...Good luck with yours, ian.

Re: diagnostics

John,Most modern cars will log fault codes in the ECU so provided the fault however intermittent, is one the ECU has been told to monitor, it will be revealed as a code. Not every car's ECU monitors the same things. You'll need a code reader to find out. These days most workshops will have one.Ian.

Re: Approved dealers in 1988

I bought my 1992 Commander from Don in 1995. The shop was Bridge Street Motorcycles in Witham and it's still there though I doubt Don is. I swapped a Honda CB500 for it. The bike had been Don's demonstrator, sold to a customer, bought back, used as a demo again, then I bought it. Don dropped it on m...

Agree with Joe.We've been using the Cardo G4 Powerset. Fits on the helmets, no wires. Bluetooth equipped, works as an intercom with voice activation, music from you phone by Bluetooth, similarly a satnav, built in FM radio, voice controlled and all prioritisable. Battery life is well over 24 hours, ...

Re: starter sprag clutch

Done this several times on my Commander, yes it's quite possible, you just dismantle the primary drive. The sprag lives at the back of the clutch drum.Changing the starter motor is a different story though...Ian.

Re: Commander ignition systems

Richard, many thanks for this very complete summary. One final question, if I may.You say that many Commanders perform admirably with the Boyer and Minimag systems. Mine has a Boyer, which seems to be OK. I'm happy to change it if it is considered life-expired but really I'm not sure if it's anywhere...

Commander ignition systems

Hello all. I'd like to ask the collective's opinion about these. My 1992 Commander still has the original Boyer unit fitted and appears to be fine. My questions concern what happens next.I'm a bit worried that because mine hasn't failed it must be about to. Strange logic but true. So, the questions:I...

Re: starting up on one cylinder

My Commander has done this since I bought it in 1995!If I use it daily it's fine. If I leave it for 2-3 days or more it starts on the right rotor only, after about half a mile and much spluttering and banging, the second rotor chimes in and then it's fine all day.I've put this down to the frame drai...

Re: More Commander water pump woes.

Well Richard, that's me well and truly put back in my box!It was indeed me who had a batch made. I sold three or four through this site so I would say to those who bought them - don't use them! They are substandard are unsuitable. If you were one of those who bought, throw it away and PM me. I'll re...

More Commander water pump woes.

I've had yet another Oldham coupling fail on my Commander. This one managed about 1000 miles. You can see the coupling in the attached pictures. Now, I'm sure there has been much bad language, inculding mine, directed at this small insignificant part that spoils an otherwise reliable and excellent mo...

Re: Commander Handlebars

Many years ago I bought a set from Graham. I asked him how strong they'd be and he said that they were the thickest that his maker could still bend without kinking. They are certainly thicker than the originals. Can't really say how strong they are in practised since I haven't dropped the bike though...

Re: Starting problems & Race bike

Mine has done this since I bought it in 1995!I reckon it's because the frame drain cheerfully allows oil to run down to foul the plug. I believe some have fitted a diverter in the form of a bottle to catch draining oil but still connecting the air side to the inlet manifold. I have not done this but...

IIRC, at the same time as you no longer need to display a tax disc - October. I'm open to correction here though...It's a good idea. Just think of all the part-months the Government won't have to refund. Nice little earner and ensures more vehicles have their tax renewed.

Re: paint colour name

My Commander is a 1992 and is in its original bright red. I have had to have a side panel repainted and the colour that matched was Ford Rosso Red.I think Norton also offered a darker metallic red at this time; I don't know the name of this colour.A good paint shop should be able to match it.Ian.

Had one on my Commander for about four years and I posted the tale of it's fitting on here at the time. Derek,I only had the coupling made, not all the parts, see post above.I paid £20 for two. I'm happy to ask for more but I'd like to gauge how many are really required. Derek, I've only had the Oldham coupling itself made in stainless; the other components remain as (I presume) Norton intended. I can organise some couplings if you still want them.Richard - I haven't kept the old couplings after testing but what I thought odd at the time was that all the other parts...

More on the water pump!

Chaps, Over the last two years I have had no less than five Oldham couplings fail. The first coincided with the pump seal self destructing but the others since have just broken. One split axially as if it was cut with a knife and the others have lost 'ears' resulting in noise, failure and in two case...

I wanted a tank bag for my Commander. They're good quality kit and are very QD.Naturally, they didn...

Message for JohnOR.I'm intrigued by your solenoid tap on the other side. Is this the kit offered by AN in the past? I was under the impression that theirs replaced the OE item but I could easily be wrong. Can you tell us more about it?Thanks in advance. Ian.

Yes, there was indeed one, though I didn't buy it. (shame on me, but I rebuilt the Commander using the workshop manual for an IP2 with supplements)I'm pretty sure it was sold by the Norton Owners Club, who may still offer it. Have you asked Graham if he has any?
