Re: Oily rear wheel
Here is my take on my own rivet link saga......I have done many cam chain soft links and I think a drive chain or two a long time ago, most of my old irons are fine with spring links..... but I've never had trouble like this one, the first problem was actually getting hold of a suitable link......RG...

Silencer mounts
My long running saga involving an oily rear wheel.....which turned out to be a leaking Koni shock......has caused me to remove the left silencer several times in quick succession; it's not over yet as I'm still doing battle with the rivet link (more of that later) and the silencer is back on the ben...

Re: Oily rear wheel
Like a plank, I managed to overlook the O ring part of the description......(no O rings in the item photo)... not that it really matters, but I think the RGM Motors part is exactly what you (and I ) need....so I've ordered one of those too......one of them is sure to fit, the others can go in the ch...

Re: Oily rear wheel
That must be a very special peg spanner......this collar was stuck .... There is something odd going on here.....earlier today I cut and pasted the rivet link part number Richard provided into the Andover search box, it came up with an X (not recognised)....so I tried variations, I came up with an O...

Re: Oily rear wheel
However, it appears a rivet link for the 5/8x3/8 Renold chain is on the 'unobtainium' list! Startrights do not have any, and there are none on Ebay - that I can see. Have you been able to source one Mick? I thought I found one on ebay, but when it turned up, it was a lightweight item and would not ...

Looking for something else on the Venhill site, noticed this item, which looks ideal as a basis for a thermocouple.....pre drilled with an 8mm head and a cavity at the hex end to fill with silicone to protect the wires. https://www.venhill.co.uk/cables-amp-components/fittings-amp-components/adjuster...

Re: Oily rear wheel
I use Silkolene which is thick and rusty coloured, this oil is thinner and pale straw coloured.......I have a forlorn hope that relatively clean oil can circulate around the chain while the black stuff settles on the gaiters.....or not. One thing I do trust about this bike at the moment (apart from ...

Re: Oily rear wheel
Hmm.......interesting stuff!........to retrieve the spring link.....how about a telescopic magnet? As it happens my task to replace the spring link with a rivet variety has ground to a halt temporarily.....I ordered a Renold rivet link from t'interweb and the bloody thing is the wrong size, so prese...

Re: Oily rear wheel
Thanks for that Richard, I had noticed the wheel side at the hub is completely dry so I was hoping that would be the case. There should have been plenty of oil in there (as there was lots over the back of the bike) as I did refill it when I last had the bike and I gave it the full amount as per the ...

Re: waterless coolant
Just putting waterless coolant review into Google brought up loads of information, a lot of it conflicting, you would really need to find a trusted source and analyse their opinion. A couple of things that did pop out of the pages were that it won't cure an existing overheating issue (although the m...

Re: Oily rear wheel
Re the exhaust clamps: when I first bought the bike it had the original car type U shaped clamps, they had been done up so tightly they had crushed a groove at the point where the silencer fits over the manifold and made getting the silencers off an absolute nightmare, to the point I thought I was g...

Re: Oily rear wheel
Hmm........once I had come down from the ceiling and had a more sensible approach I realised that the oil was limited to the area of the rear wheel and up under the mudguard where it was thrown by the wheel; the front end around the gearbox sprocket is completely dry. 20180406_180123_resized (720x12...

Re: Oily rear wheel
Further to my last posting, I have just had a look through the workshop manual and realised the oil around the oil pump is meant to be there, (when all else fails; read the instructions red face ) and secondly it occurs to me that any oil within the drive chain gaiters etc will also be just a few hu...

Oily rear wheel
One step forward, two steps back; I took my Classic in for it's first MOT in five years today, it's a 20 mile round trip and the further I rode it, the better it went......by the time I got home it was running really nicely.....which is when I noticed the oil on the rear wheel evil No problem I thou...

The discs were £100 each, but if I had bought four or more then they would have been £90 each.....I guess once they have the machine set up and programmed, the more they make, the more economical it becomes. Re: Thermocouples

Re: Thermocouples
I take it the solder 'snot' should not touch the sleeve bolt?.......or is that irrelevant as it is simply reacting to temperature, not connections? How about something like this for a crimp fitting? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100Pcs-bag-stainless-steel-fishing-line-Crimp-sleeve-copper-tube-1-0mm-2-0...

I would never have known there was a redundant second tapped hole in the left rotor housing.....and it probably wouldn't have occurred to me to use it anyway unless I was absolutely certain it was suitable, so that is well worth knowing, thank you. Re: Thermocouples
That's interesting Richard......given that they are so simple, how do they usually fail? I take it from that, the thermocouple wires have specific properties that produce specific voltages, so getting the right wire is important.......which makes re-using the original wire a desirable option? My Cla...

As it happens I have an update on my cast iron disc problem; I picked up a set of three stainless rotors from Allbike Engineering in Greenwich late last week and got them all fitted today. Hi John, I am pretty hopeless with electrics, particularly fault finding, however, having had the need to fit some accessories to a bike with a Canbus system (which meant nothing to me) I came across this little gadget. In essence, you simply wire this to the battery and one wire to a switched live ...

Re: Pale Grey Powder Coating
That looks a proper mess doesn't it? I have to say that despite my loathing for powder coating, I think the durability of whatever it is on the engine is quite impressive given the temperature range it has to cope with along with salt, stone chippings and all the rest of it. I popped off my footrest...

There is a nice clear photo of a brand new wheel here on the Andover Norton spares site.
https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/shop-de ... er-44-0064
It's definitely silver.....it seems hard to imagine it will eventually fade to grey. (there's a song title in there)
Mick.

The battleship grey colour does look a bit bizarre, but these wheels are in particularly nice condition, so at least for now I think I will leave the colour alone and find something ...

Re: Rad:cooling
In the absence of an expert in engine cooling (who might pop up of course) I would suggest looking at what the bike manufacturers do, everything is done for a reason, although with bikes, cosmetics will lead to compromises. If a bike has a shrouded radiator fan that is not immediately visible, it's ...
