Re: IP II Carburation Issues ??

Dave, My experience of the air-cooled rotaries is limited I have a water-cooled Commander, smoking on start-up obviously suggests too much oil so I would check the oil pump setting and try to measure oil consumption against mileage, I get around 1000 miles/litre. I have never heard of a rotary getti...

Frank,

I have never used iridium spark plugs so unable to provide any recommendations, I have used NGK C8E for many years but this year at the TT I had a few issues with oiling the plugs so am trying a hotter plug NGK C7E to see if that improves things, so far so good.

Ian, Many thanks for the reply, I had another good look yesterday with the inspection cover off and engine running, moving the oil control lever to max by hand I could not see any oil leakage around the oil feed pipes, I did this until the engine began to really smoke so feel confident that the issu...

Oil Pump Issues

I suspect I have an issue with the oil pump on my Commander having found that that the gearbox oil level slowly increases. I have checked the pipes and connections as much as I can through the cover finding that all seems to be OK, perhaps its the pump shaft seal. Has anyone else had similar issues ...

Re: Commander tunning

Frank, The thermistor is near the thermostat housing RH side look for a device screwed into the engine with two wires it is close to the temperature gauge sender which has just one wire. On an engine with poor compression disconnecting the thermistor masks the problem and allows for a decent ick ove...

Re: Commander tunning

I found that trying to adjust the mixture (height of the main jet) on the bike is very difficult, just small adjustments can make a big difference. The best thing to do is to remove the carbs and if not recently overhauled do so and set the main jet height in accordance with the instructions. To set...

Correct, all the cars I have owned are as you say, rear fog lights go off when the headlights switched to high beam.

Re: Fog lights

The rear fog lights are controlled by a dedicated switch on the left hand side of the faring, this assumes the switch is set to the ON position.

Rear fog lights OFF: running lights, side lights, main/high beam

Rear fog lights ON: low/dip beam

Clive/Trev, I have bought a few of the original running lights over the years from https://www.airpart.co.uk/page/electrical-and-lighting. The lights were originally made by Whelen now called Wat who now list the lights as legacy owing I would imagine to the advancement of LED technology. I have two...

Jorn, Your comments, below seem to contradict each other: When picking up speed from slowing down for a turn or for a crossroad, it runs very uneven - I have to turn the throttle, increase rpm and slip the clutch in order to get it going. I would have said that this was a fuelling issue, turning the...

All,

Its a Yamaha item, my key says Yamaha anyway, have a look at Yambits as most things on a Commander are XJ900F the cap might just be the same.

I managed to overhaul my cap, its possible to take it to pieces and make a new seal, have a look I do not think its difficult

When I need spares for the Yamaha bits on my Commander I go to Yambits and order for a XJ900F 1985 to 1992. Like Tim my back wheel is off the ground when the bike is on the centre stand. If both your wheels are on the ground you either have an issue with the centre stand, very unlikely on a Commande...

Trev,

You will not be sorry when you get your bike on the road, once having ridden a Norton Rotary Commander you will be spoilt for anything else. I ride boxer BM's for a blood bike group, I just do not see what people like about those bikes.

Tim, Nice one. I have a hydraulic lift with wooden top and in way of where the centre stand contacts the lift I screwed in place a square of plywood about 1 to 1.5 cm thick, once the bike is on the centre stand I use a heavy duty webbing strap to pull down the rear of the bike lifting the front whee...

My Commander occasionally does the same I put it down to not fully engaging first gear. If it becomes an issue I will have a look at the condition of items 14, 15, 16, 17 and 20 page 22 of the parts book with the exception of item 17 all parts are available from ANL.

I hope you get to go and have a good time, its not an issue being on a Honda, one of these days you and I are going to meet at a rally.

Last Ride for 2021

I was hoping for another outing before laying the Commander up for the winter but with the wintery conditions and the salting of the roads here in the North East of Scotland I have decided that my last ride in late November was my last for 2021, this year I just missed my target of riding 5k miles a...
