Sticking throttle butterflies IP2
I noticed that when I wound the throttle up towards the top end on the range, (not while running) it sticks open. As I rarely need to go to that position on the throttle, it's not too much of an issue but should I need to wind it on a bit to get out of a sticky situation, It could feed me into a sti...

Re: Commander fuel leak
If your carbs have leaked fuel through the engine to the exhaust, that fuel has not got any oil in it and it will have washed any oil from the side faces of the chambers. I would inject some oil into the plug holes and turn the engine over backwards by hand to re-oil the working surfaces. Don't ask ...

Re: Chain Gaiter Seal
Going back to your original post, I thought that the chain was just flapping around inside two rubber tubes and wondered how accurate tension could be assessed. Once I had it all apart and realized that the gaiters form guides that closely fit the chain rollers, you can see that the slack in the gai...

Re: Chain Gaiter Seal
I substituted carefully bent stainless steel jubilee clips for the front tywraps. if you bend it into a rectangle with some flatish sides it will give better pressure on the rubber than a tywrap. The back end is still tywraps though as they are a bit more accessible.

Re: Loosing the will to live
Hi Richard, the bike is an IP2 and never had a ballast resistor, I still need power to the orange lead going into the Startright ignition box, as soon as it is removed, despite there being power to the white (Feed) lead, the engine stops. As an aside, the bike is much more responsive from the off wi...

Re: Loosing the will to live
I have a bike that is up and running at last. The trigger unit was the culprit and a new one solved the problem. I had the ignition unit tested, no fault found. The orange wire feeding the digi box needs power all the time. Powering it from the output side of the solenoid results in ignition, but on...

Re: Setting the idle on su carbs
The idle is controlled by the air bleed screw on the alloy casting forward of the carbs ie on the bit between the carb and the engine. screwing it out will speed up the tick over. Set it high and adjust to achieve a smooth tickover without hunting. The overall mixture is set by the screw on the side...

Re: Loosing the will to live
I've had some success at last with the old Sparkright setup. I disconnected the vacuum pipe to the petrol tap and cranked for about a minute and blew all the collected fuel out of the plug holes. dry plugs in and she caught just, bit reluctant to run initially but picked up eventually. The old trigg...

Re: Loosing the will to live
I seem to be getting nowhere fast. I had a brief fire up by jury rigging the supply to the digi box direct from the battery but I couldn't sustain it due to no oil in the gearbox etc. I have a new trigger and with either system, start right digital or spark right electronic, I have a very good spark...

Re: Loosing the will to live
Hi John, I think that is where the fault lies, I managed to get a brief fire up by running a wire from the +ve side of the battery direct to the white power input to the digi box. There is an orange wire that needs a 12v supply, labelled cranking boost. It should come from the start solenoid. I will...

Re: Loosing the will to live
I may be getting somewhere. I'm beginning to suspect the hall effect pickup. I have removed the digi box and jury rigged the old sparkright unit and hitachi coils. Holding the plug against the engine, on the LH plug I'm getting one spark as I press the starter button, on the RH plug I'm getting one ...

Re: Loosing the will to live
Thanks for your suggestions gents. Prior to the problem the idle speed was rock steady and restarting was not generally a problem, cranking with the plugs out results in plenty of fuel vapour and the plugs are wet. Cranking with the plugs held against the engine produces a spark and the engine has n...

Loosing the will to live
I took the IP2 to France for the international NOC rally and on about four occasions it refused to start, plenty of cranking but no light up. Then for no good reason it would start. On the return journey I noticed a slight hesitancy in the cruise, almost like someone just tugging at your waistband, ...

Re: BSA thoughts?
I bought one of these about ten years ago in big bits. It looked good when I had finished with it, but, the brakes were poor, the vibration was dreadful and the single carb engine, whilst quick off the mark, was slower than molasses in January. If you want a bike to ride, avoid it IMHO.Dave

Re: Leaking g/box
The rubber mudflap that Richard is talking about forms a lip that fills with road dirt and then stays damp. It is possible to fit the flap on the front side of the mudguard edge and then the road dirt can get away. All IP2 Commander and Classic machines are affected. The other rot area is the top da...

Re: Leaking g/box
Hi John, didn't see you down in France, you must have been keeping a low profile. You can replace the seal, it's a bit of a struggle fighting with the chain gaiters to get the chain out of the way to allow the sprocket to be removed. Once it's off you can carefully punch through the seal and prise i...

Re: question about aircooled rotary engines
Interpol 2 and Classic models have the aircooled engines. The Classic and military IP2s have a lower compression and produce 79 BHP and the civilian IP2s and Commanders develop 85 BHP The aircooled engines obviously do not have the water pump and radiator and have a slightly lower output alternator....

Re: F1 Question. Oil and brake master cylinder
If your fuel pump is wired anything like a Honda NTV 650 one, it may not pump until the engine is cranking. Just putting power across it will not make it work until it gets a feed from the cranking engine. So don't commit it to the bin until you've tested it. Take the pipe off, route it to a catch t...

I'm planning on fitting a pair of new tyres to My IP2 prior to the NOC French rally and was considering Maxxis Hi-Max as an option. IP2 tank vent
When I have a tank bag fitted to my IP2, the bag and its contents end up smelling of fuel, presumably because the cap vents upwards or into the scupper area and then up. Any ideas on how to prevent this issue? I'm thinking along the lines of sealing the edges of the filler cap and forcing it to vent...

I have just renewed with Footman James £138 for an IP2 and a Commando. the quote from Peter James was £82.50 It appeared to me that for agreed value from PJ I would need an independent valuation. I'll probably move to them next year. The small print with FJ is plentiful (22 sides of A4) and every as...

I recently asked a Ford dealer if he would fix my aux input to the car radio whilst it was in for service (and still inside the 3 year waranty) The young buck dealing with me was quick to point out that I had not had the car serviced at the 12 month point and so the warranty was invalid.
