Re: Pipework

The two short pipes on the r/h induction tube are remnants of an oil scavenge system that became redundant. The factory mod was to connect the two together with a short piece of plastic tubing. The other pipe on the back of the r/h engine plate was also part of the redundant scavenge system. It shou...

David, I don't recall the Norton build register book being that complete. The number may have been recorded on the individual machine job cards, but I believe those cards are long gone - unless John Williams knows better of course. I have corresponded directly with Geoff on ways of removing the lock...

Re: Classic Petrol Tap

Mick, You can use the IP2/Commander tap 92.1783 on a Classic, but the fuel outlet stub will point forwards instead of backwards. It will need a longer fuel pipe, which doesn't look so neat, but that gives you the opportunity to fit a proper paper-element filter - always a good move. You could, of co...

Hi Miles,
You left a phone number for me to call you back.
I think the number you gave is incorrect as, at the third call, a very irate lady gave me an earfull and claimed not to know you.
Please try again on my landline, around 7pm is best.

Hi Holger,
I don't have a cross reference by part number, but that one looks to be correct for F1 and F1 Sport.
The original Yamaha part number is 26H.24500.00.

Re: Electronic Ignition Unit E.I.U.

Hi Roger, The only query I can answer is the front brake switch. It's a hydraulic switch that is, or should be, on a junction block bolted the the bottom yoke and cunningly hidden between the two hoses going to the brake calipers. The original Brembo items are now all 30 or more years old. There's a...

Re: Classic Petrol Tap

Early IP2's had a simple on/off mechanical tap on the left and a three-position vacuum tap on the right. Many engines failed because plod riders didn't turn the l/h tap off at the end of the day and as fuel evaporated from the hot float chambers, more fuel was allowed in. The evaporated fuel ended u...

Re: Oil pipes and engine removal

Roy, The pipes are standard 3/16" brake line material, the sleeve nuts are standard 3/8" UNF. The inner end of the pipe has a conical flare. When re-assembling, use Wellseal on the nut as a lubricant and sealant. Before putting the engine back, make sure the throttle levers can move freely...

Re: Oil pipes and engine removal

Hi Roy, To re-seal or replace the steel pipe, the engine has to come out for a proper job. Do you have the IP2 Workshop Manual? . to hold the eccentric shaft whilst undoing the sprocket and clutch nuts, remove the auxiliary flywheel (three M8 cap heads screws) and you'll find two 1/2" holes in ...

Re: Oil pipes and engine removal

Roy, There is no plug on air-cooled engines, only water-cooled. There are two types of flexible oil pipe. Early IP2's had clear plastic pipe, fixed to the steel pipes at the engine end by screwed clips. The plastic tended to go hard with heat/age and cracks were not uncommon, particularly by the cli...

Re: Oil pipes and engine removal

The usual reason for oil leaks at the back of the engine is wear in the throttle spindle bushes - and that's a major job to fix (engine split). Before embarking on such a venture, I suggest washing off the back of the engine with solvent and then trying to see where the oil is coming from. It may be...

Re: F1 Yamaha parts

Hans,
Well done!
The only difference between the pairs of numbers for front and rear is that one is left handed and the other right.
It may be important to some owners that the lettering on the orange lens is the correct way up.

They were probably XJ900F 'cos that's what we had from Yamaha as as a donor bike for parts.
BUT, the F1 has different stem lengths front/rear so one of them may be from another model.

Re: Fog driving lights Commander

Terry,
Those lights were originally for light aero application; Whelen in USA still list them with part numbers starting 70346. As an aero part, they'll probably command a price premium though.
Woodway in Coventry were suppliers to Norton but their web site doesn't now include them.

Hi Jannes,
You could put the IP2 bar on the left side and the Classic one on the right.
That would give you a better handle for lifting onto the main stand.

Re: Liftbar Classic

Hi Jannes,
The chrome-plated bar is the same for both sides, but the bracket at the rear of the bar, hidden behind the plastic panel, is handed left and right.
It is possible to bend a left side bracket to make it into a right side one.
Now go find a bar and bracket! AN don't appear to have either.
