Re: Ex-Police Commander

Something not quite right with this one being billed as ex-police? No reflective tape anywhere for a start.
Might be another TRRL bike - look at those huge leg guards on the fairing. Can't ever remember seeing those on any production Commander?

Re: IP2/Classic front wheel

What a doddle - it came straight off in less than 10 seconds!
After something like 35 years on the front wheel exposed to who knows what, I was expecting it to be a real struggle. In my view a real testament to the build quality of the rotaries by Richard and colleagues at Shenstone.

IP2/Classic front wheel

Does anyone know how to remove the speedo drive off the front wheel on the Grimeca alloys fitted to the IP2 and Classic? The workshop manual simply says "Extract the speedometer drive gear" without explaining how to actually extract it. I have cleaned all the grease off that area to have a...

Re: Commander rear brake disc

Does the rear disc get that hot on the Commander? I've only got the naked IP2 where the rear wheel is completely open, so if it sounds like a daft question my apologies. For John's benefit, here is a vented disc next to a standard solid disc - these are car disc brakes though, the Yamaha ones are mu...

Re: Classic part

Jannes As Richard says, charge warning lights no longer seem to be needed on bikes and as I have the Yamaha/Commander regulator-rectifier on my IP2 that does not have any warning light wire, I added one myself from this supplier:https://www.improvingclassicmotorcycles.com/products.htm It works well ...

Re: Charging issue - high revs equal low volts??

Yes, mine is still on the Sparkrite system and now I know what that loose yellow wire is for. However, as you say, deep pockets needed for stumping up almost £160 to replace the tacho from AN, but as it only occasionally stops working I can live with that so in the meantime I will keep an eye out fo...

Re: Charging issue - high revs equal low volts??

I have now wired the digital voltmeter direct to the battery, with fuse, and taken the bike out for a run. At tickover it first shows 13.4 volts and quickly rises to 14.7 volts, and then stays between 14.4-14.8 volts riding along with no load. Side lights drops it down to 13.8 volts and with the hea...

Re: Charging issue - high revs equal low volts??

Tony. Yes, very useful, thanks very much and it's reassuring that it's not just my bike. Having checked all the earths they seem fine. I was toying with the idea of feeding the voltmeter directly from the battery anyway, which I will now sort out. The other thing I thought might be a cause is if the...

Re: Charging issue - high revs equal low volts??

I agree Clive. I was going to do a full rewire over this next winter anyway even before I saw how bad the harness was, but looks like I will need to do something sooner. Regarding the warning light, I added it before the voltmeter, as the XJ/Commander reg/rectifier on my IP2 does not have any warnin...

Re: Charging issue - high revs equal low volts??

This is proving to be tricky. The charging system appears to be working at the battery end, which is probably the most important bit, but the warning light and digital voltmeter within the wiring loom say otherwise, which isn't too bad but annoying as they should really tally with the battery and de...

Re: Charging issue - high revs equal low volts??

I think I might have solved it - or at least know where to look next. I checked for earth continuity between the rectifier and battery -ve and it's fine, but to reinforce it I have added a separate lead. The same readings are showing as before. Then I thought it worth double checking what was actual...

Charging issue - high revs equal low volts??

Having finally resolved my fuel leak after rebuilding the carbs once, but the petrol tap six times and then reverting back to its original diaphragm, I now have a bizarre charging problem in that as revs rise the volts drop off. The standard (I assume) Kokusan alternator is on my IP2, along with the...

IP2 front wheel buckled?

Whilst my IP2 is up on the ramp, I checked the front wheel as I recall the last time I looked at it back in the winter I thought it was not quite true, but then forgot all about it. Sure enough, spinning it round shows about 2mm difference on the side and about 1mm vertical. I assume as mine is an e...

Re: Gasket or not?

Good news on that Mick. I took my right transfer port off to re-seal it and I've done around 100 miles or so. However, the bike's up on the bench again as I have to take the carbs off to replace leaking float chamber valves. And I have to remove that bolt that holds the engine cover in place, but gu...

Thanks Richard and John. Carb parts have been ordered from Burlen. I actually have a Yamaha tank on my IP2, which I have only recently changed along with the bodywork. The fuel tap does have a prime position, but I only use the normal 'on' setting. I cleaned the tap and checked it before using the t...

SU carb float needles

After an aborted ride out yesterday due to a non-starter and petrol pouring out the bottom of the engine, I reckon I need to replace my SU float valves and maybe check the petrol tap diaphragm too. I'm a bit puzzled though as to why it suddenly happened, because I pushed the bike out of the garage, ...

Re: Engine vibration at high RPM

I've got the IP2 which is air cooled but has the same carbs as your Commander and also had poor running problems. Regarding the mixture, I'm pretty sure you should be doing this by taking the carb tops off and setting the jet height to an exact measurement as explained in the workshop manual. As I u...

Re: spark plugs

I thought I read somewhere that if you have used 'normal' plugs in the rotary, changing back to the surface discharge types might cause problems? The normal plugs apparently leave carbon in the recessed area that would not be there with a surface discharge plug fitted, and this gets scraped off as t...

Yes, I have a similar issue with my right hand port, but I think mine might be aggravated by having removed the small cover a few times (it's held down by one of the transfer port bolts) to access the vacuum pipe etc. I would have thought all the other bolts fixing the transfer ports would have been...

Thanks Richard, that's a good tip and worth pursuing. I cured the same problem with a Commando I had years ago by having the master cylinder rebored.
