Re: IP2 air bypass pipes
Thanks for that Graham, I must admit I hadn't thought of that. the tick over will come down if I push down on the throttle butterfly levers with a long screwdriver. That was leading me to suspect the closing of the butterflies. Initially the start and fast running is fine, then the retard kicks in a...

Re: IP2 air bypass pipes
I've got a digital ignition from Graham Wilshaw. That works well and the retard kicks in as expected once it's warmed up, so I'm concentrating on the induction side of the system but thanks for your ideas John.

Re: IP2 air bypass pipes
Thanks Paul, I suspected the throttle butterflies weren't closing fully and have fitted an extra spring. I don't want to increase the spring strength any more or I won't be able to open the throttle. If I drag the clutch when at standstill to bring the tick over down, it comes down and holds for a w...

IP2 air bypass pipes
My IP2 is running properly now apart from a tick over that creeps up towards 2000rpm making life difficult. The culprit I believe is the bypass pipes that feed the engine when the throttle is closed. I think there is an air leak in one of these and, whilst not as bad as it was to bleed my vacuum awa...

Re: Morning all from an RE5 owner
How well do they perform? apart from fuel consumption. I guess they are quite weighty. I know the Suzuki Kettle was not a good handler in its day.

That looks very nice, I thought the Re5 had its instruments in a cylindrical pod or is that the early models?

Thanks, I like the "young" bit John. ( I was 60 last month) I must admit there were times when it nearly went in the for sale list but then that would have been admitting defeat. A friend recently sent me a photo of us standing on the wind and wave swept deck of the "Lady of Man"...

Re: IP2 losing power
Looks like I've got to the bottom of it at last. The left hand throttle bypass tube was not fully home in the rotor housing. Looks like when I refitted the carb I must have pushed the carb forward onto the manifold tube and bent the bypass tube. ( the RH bypass tube hides behind the primary chain ca...

Re: IP2 losing power
Still struggling to get the IP2 to run properly. I've now established that when it is reluctant to rev (most of the time) pulling the choke out produces an increase in power. That would indicate the fuel that is coming through the enrichment circuit of the carb is making up for the lack of fuel at o...

Re: Commander wiring
All the police wiring will have been incorporated into the harness when it was made. This will involve removing all the wrapping/sleeving and rewrapping after you have removed what is surplus. I replaced my IP2 harness with one from Graham at Startright. Your differences to that will be the instrume...

Re: Norton commander for sale.
Your ex would be entitled to half your £5500. better to sell it to a "mate" for a quid and give her 50p (Nobody knows what they are really worth, the bike that is, so who can argue about what you got for it) Can you see what goes through my mind when I'm lying in the bath? you need a bette...

Good point, I could understand using it in the final drive but not the engine /gearbox. Honda shaft drives are pretty sweet, My Son has an old NTV650 and it's one of the nicest machines i've ridden, about the same performance as a 750 Commando with none of the vices

Re: Roller Bearings
To lubricate a plain bearing you would need a feed of oil to it. That would then end up being burnt. From what I can work out, the roller bearing can survive with a much smaller supply of oil and, in view of the high temperatures involved in an air cooled wankel engine, a roller is probably better s...

Re: Veglia/Motometer Tacho
Have a look at my thread three pages back titled IP2 rev counter for some good gen on the IP2 tacho. the offending item could be the voltage regulator. some tacho's are powered from the alternator and others from the low tension side of the coil.

Re: IP2 losing power
That eureka moment came last night after fitting two new coils. So what they say about 90% of carb problems are electrical is probably true. I'd been working on the principal that it was probably the last thing I was fiddling with. I've replaced the two 12v coils with two 6v coils but there is no ba...

Re: IP2 losing power
Nope, that didn't work. when the bike is started, it runs a little fast hunting around 1100rpm as you would expect before the retard switch kicks in. then after about 2 minutes the revs start to fall until the engine just stops, got to be petrol starvation hasn't it? Carbs off again, tonight, checke...

I've just bought a new trigger from Boyer. The previous one, that I wrongly suspected was faulty, was Graham's last one and cost about half the price of the Boyer item.

Using the bike for work, the problem appears after about 8 miles, both there and back. going to have a look at the filler cap vent. Might be time to get the drill out

Re: IP2 losing power
Well the new needles are in and there seems to be no great difference. It still starts, runs, ticks over but has no urge and is flat above 4200rpm. I've done the carbs to death, the ignition trigger is new. now turning my attention to coils and ht leads in desperation.

IP2 Carb needles
I recall a few years ago some discussion in the Epitrochoid about SU needles fitted to the IP2 as I'm about to replace mine is there any mileage (did you see what I did there?) in changing from ADR needles? (my current needles are marked 51XA)

Re: IP2 losing power
I've discovered a bent needle in the right hand carb which will need replacing. It's marked 51XA despite the workshop manual giving ADR. ADR appears on the SU/Burlen website but not 51XA The needle guide has a small lip to displace the needle forward in it's normal seated position. On close examinat...

Re: Vibrating brakes
I had this problem on my Commander a few years ago albeit with Yamaha brakes. The cure for me was to change from sintered brake pads to organic compound. They are easier on your discs as well. I think Ferodo are available from Motoworld the BMW parts specialist part number FDB108P Also pay attention...

Re: IP2 losing power
I decided to carry out a more subjective road test to try and establish an accurate diagnosis. Accelerating normally would produce a misfire or distinct lack of power from about 3800rpm upwards irrespective of what gear was selected. Approaching 3500rpm and snapping the throttle open (not wide open)...

Re: IP2 losing power
Hi Anthony, My initial problem appeared after I removed the suction chambers from the carbs for cleaning, at the same time I detected a knock on the LH side of the engine that I traced to the ignition trigger being struck by the flywheel after it had worked loose (the trigger that is) subsequently I...

No John, I don't think that's the issue. The bike starts and runs and, once warmed up, the revs drop back commensurate with the retard circuit working properly.

Re: IP2 losing power
I've just fitted a new Boyer ignition trigger but the problem still exists. The bike continues to start and run with no problems the throttle will respond normally on the stand but when being driven it bogs down approaching 4000rpm. Last year when the problem was the ignition trigger, the symptoms w...

Re: IP2 losing power
Referring to my earlier thread "loosing the will to live" it would seem that the trigger has a magnetic core. I know that magnets don't like to be knocked or hammered so i'm guessing the trigger is toast after taking a bit of a hammering from the flywheel. Looking as to why it worked loose...
