Re: Handle Bar Switches

The handlebars on the Classic are near as makes little difference those fitted to the XS1100........if they are unobtainable, the Yamaha RXS100 or YB100 handlebars are also very close if I recall correctly.

Re: Gasket or not?

My bike has always had this problem, however I've been out on it over the last two days and I still have zero leaks from the transfer ports so at the moment I consider it cured. I used this stuff as it's intended for high temperature applications.......and I bought the thinnest available. https://ww...

Re: Gasket or not?

Update on my home made gaskets for the air transfer ports on my Classic. Rode out to Hastings and back today, about 60 miles in total and it got fully up to temperature in town. Not a trace of leaking from either transfer port, it's so nice to have a spotless engine at the end of a run....and, maybe...

Re: Gasket or not?

Further to the gasket saga, I made a pair up using 0.4mm gasket sheet intended for stationary engines (high temperature) gave each one a very thin smear of Hylomar both sides and refitted the transfer ports; the extra 0.5mm does fractionally raise the casting of course and I found I had to bolt down...

Re: Gasket or not?

Further to my last, having given it some thought I've ordered some thin, (0.4mm) high temperature gasket paper to make up a pair of gaskets...... I think this problem will just reoccur unless I do something more than just spreading sealant, so the plan is a gasket with a thin smear of whatever seala...

Re: Gasket or not?

Resurrecting an ancient post on air transfer ports.......my left side port always leaked a little oily brown fluid, so I tried the high temp silicone as suggested and it cured it.....for a while. Recently I noticed my idle speed is slightly elevated by a couple of hundred rpm and it was suggested it...

Re: Carb adjustment

Brilliant......thank you for that Anthony, much appreciated, from that I will see if I can find some that are a perfect snug fit, made from a material resistant to modern fuels. This site popped up and gives a simple layman's terms guide.....it's looking like Nitrile or Viton at a glance. https://ww...

Re: Carb adjustment

Thank you for that.......I have had problems with Burlen O rings that lost their integrity....presumably due to Ethanol in the fuel. (which is just my assumption).....in any event, they were no longer the same size they were when fitted. In the hope of preventing that in future I only run the bike o...

I very much appreciate any input.....it all helps the climb up the learning curve. Re: Carb adjustment

Hmm...thank you all for that, as it happens I have always had a very small leak of dirty brown fluid from the left side carb/rotor housing joint which (I think) I smeared a little sealant on last time they were out....but I did notice yesterday the same thing (tiny amount) on the right side. I truly...

Re: Carb adjustment

Resurrecting an old thread, a further update on my carb saga.....I dragged the Classic out today for a run over to Rye where all the bike congregate, luckily it's always been a brilliant starter, exactly the same process as usual....but not this time; I suspected it was flooded, so I gave up before ...

Re: Bad flat spot, any ideas? Re5.

It could be the port valve timing.....which can be a pain; the hardest part is understanding exactly what is required. Some years back, Roland Van Cauter wrote an excellent description of the adjustment process, however, English was not his first language, so I sat down one evening and made it easil...

Re: Gasket or not?

Doug Hele came up with a fix using shims to reduce movement of the damper piston and reduce the rattle. AN may still have some, 48.0263 Shim .005", although there's a strong chance they'll need cleaning. I hadn't heard of that before......you are right, AN do have some in stock so I'll order a...

Gasket or not?

Hi all, I took my Classic out for a 30 mile spin to the pub and back last night and it is running like a watch, super smooth and responsive, it would be near perfect if the forks didn't chatter evil ......but that's an incurable issue as I understand it and not the subject of this post. One of the a...

Re: Carb adjustment

Update on my carb saga; I've just done twenty miles and it's a different bike Very Happy ......it's lovely now, I was pretty much convinced it was fixed from the moment it started, it just sounded so different, the spitting and hesitation is all gone, once she is up to temperature the idle is a rock...

Re: Wiring route

Found it......(obvious once you spot it) a little cut out just underneath the mounting bolt, routes the wires away from harm nicely...... I still wish they were sleeved at the point where they pass the metal cover plate......but problem solved in any event.

I was looking at the starter today as I have the right side carb off.....on the face of it, it looks reasonably easy, one of the bolts is a bit hard to get at, but then I had a look at the other side and it looks like it can't be withdrawn without dismantling half the bike........lets hope that is o...

Now if it were the starter motor that needs replacing, that's very character-building.
That must be the issue I had at the back of my mind.......lets hope the starter motor is an exceptionally good quality reliable part.... wink

what is important are good O Rings in the outer part As mentioned previously I have had a couple of issues with these O rings, they seem to swell, lose all their tension and no longer do the job, so this time I'm trying a generic nitrile rubber O ring that seems to be a good smooth fit and is suppo...

Re: Carb adjustment

As a (hopefully) last word on this subject, looking at the starter valve body, it has a smooth internal surface and the valve spindle turns inside that, but although it's a smooth fit, it is by no means a perfect smooth fit, there is play, so I wonder how it retains the fuel that passes through it. ...

Do you think this jet has no function then despite the fact it does connect to the venturi of the carb?
