Re: Boyer ignition

David,

I agree, however I feel the Boyer gives a more even tick over, I have been told that the Boyer and Mini Mag use a different retard setting, that said the Mini Mag is good system.

All I have to do now is save up for a new one to carry as a spare.

Re: Boyer ignition

Richard, Thank you for your post, being encapsulated makes getting at the components within the Boyer difficult if not impossible. Its a shame as the Boyer is a good unit but as Boyer no longer make them the labour cost even if they were interested would probably be greater than a new Mini Mag. If I...

Boyer ignition

While at the IoM my Boyer ignition failed fortunately I carry a spare Minmag. I suspect the Boyer will go in the bin but just in case has anyone had their Boyer ignition box repaired ?

Thanks

Mick, For Startright paste this into your browser; http://startright.co.uk/index.php?main_page=page&id=32&chapter=1 JB's comment re adjusting the throttle discs with the throttle cable adjuster will mask the issue, this adjuster should only be used as follows: Ensure the throttle cable is adjusted c...

Re: coils & condencers

John, I have always used NGK C8E or CR8E both work OK for me, the left hand rotor occasionally oils up, the last time it happened was queuing to join the Newcastle to Ijmuiden ferry, I limped on with quite a few back fires and just one rotor amazingly it got us up the ramp onto the mezzanine deck wi...

Re: Commander will not idle when hot

Dean, If you do not have a manual let me know, if you do; follow the instructions for setting the idle. Air leaks between carbs and engine result in uncontrollable high idle, leaking cold start enrichment O Rings cause a very rich mixture. The SU carbs are a simple device but can cause issues if you...

Mick,

See attached used but good O Ring removed from the cold start enrichment device from a spare HIF4

As accurately as possible it measures 1.75mm O Ring cord, 15mm OD

Re: Carb adjustment

Mick, I purchase spares from Burlen no one else, if the enrichment device and carb is clean and the device is lubricated with engine oil during assembly I have not found any issues in use, the only issue I have had was my fault I was not sufficiently careful when assembling the the device and nipped...

Re: Carb adjustment

Mick,

I do not have any experience with the air cooled classics, just the water cooled Commanders, you should try to contact to Richard Negus.

Sorry I cannot help further

Re: Carb adjustment

Mick,

High idle speed for me has always been due to air leaks between the card(s) and the rotor housings, any leaks here will increase speed.

Should read "the CARBS(s) and the rotor housings"

Re: Carb adjustment

Mick, I do not have an air cooled classic but for what it is worth herewith my experience with my Commander. I have only once had an issue with the cold start O Rings, it was very obvious that there was a problem, massively over rich on the left hand rotor with induction tube very cold when compared...

John,

Google "General charging information for AGM and GEL batteries" in doing so you will find all the information you need regarding charging and general care and maintenance.

Re: more amps

Zed, JB is correct in that your idle speed is a bit on the low side, 13 volts at motorway speed is OK. If you do not want to increase your idle speed its OK but I would suggest it is not a good idea to leave it idling for to long. I test my charging system as follows: With a good volt meter/multi me...

Ian/Terry, Thank you for the replies, I was aware of the posts looking for mirrors but hoped upon hope that someone might have a couple tucked away that they wanted shot of. I investigated stick on mirrors but being 3.0 mm thick am afraid that it would not look at all OK, I read an old post where a ...

Re: rotation

John, I see what you mean. I turn my engine in both directions, why? because if you oil the rotors via the spark plug holes and turn it in its normal direction some the oil drops directly into the exhausts, so I also turn the engine in the opposite direction so that the oil get carried around the en...

Re: Starter Sprag slipping

John, I tried the Harley Davidson pink gearbox oil, didn't think it made much if any difference so after overhauling the gearbox I went back to straight 140, I also use the red power steering oil in the primary drive, it seems to do the job. I changed the same seal a couple of years ago but do not r...
