Re: Engine vibration at high RPM

So you can embed images on this forum. This is the picture of the Commander with the original fork but custom front brake and rotor. Also the 1010 prototype that recently sold had the same Brembo caliper:

Re: Engine vibration at high RPM

Any additional information would be gratefully received. Would you mind posting a picture of your front wheel setup so I can put sopme of what you are describing in context?

Re: Engine vibration at high RPM

I see more than one person has modded the front brake with Brembo calipers. They appear to be attached by a bracket as you describe; have not managed to get any information on it and one rebuilt out in Canada had floating discs to boot! Having asked a few people how to do this and who know how to do...

Re: Engine vibration at high RPM

Mine has one of Richard N's electronic ignition systems and it is rock steady at idle now, especially when hot. I was told when beding the engine in to run it through the whole rev range. Also my limited understanding of cabs is that the throttle has to go all the way to ensure all of the jets are b...

Re: Commander head light glass cover

You can get plastic covers for the headlight from Andover. My glass one was used to make their plastic ones more accurate after i cracked it. Their's do fit now but you will need a replacement foam seal otherwise water can get in behind the cover.

Engine vibration at high RPM

I have been mucking around with the carbs to set the mixture and the idle. I used Macl's trick of riding around with the fairings off and a screwdriver in the pocket, taking it down a country road and trashing seven bells out of it. This all cam about due to an observed inability to accelerate for t...

Re: 1010 prototype

Interpol2471, Do you remember the part number or a description for the set as i would really like to get this set-up for my Commander. I come from an era where stopping a bike only requires 2 finger when going quickly. The Yamaha setup requires a hand full which is distracting the throttle blips dui...

Yeap. It involves minimising or eliminating the 2 stroke oil, reshaping the chamber, going lean, etc. or the direction Garside went in moving away from the Otto cycle.

Re: spark plugs

The reason for the surface discharge plug was an attempt to reduce what in Jan Norby's book is called 'breathing volume'. The bane of peripherally configured rotary engines is tip leakage and over the years many attempt have been made to reduce this. This volume is small compared to a peripheral inl...

Re: more amps

Truth be told I am seeing 47.6mpg so I am rounding up and being very gentle, so 45 sounds more realistic in the long run. She has only done a few thousand miles since rebuild so once the tip gaps increase I expect the efficiency to go down. That and running it gently is a recipe for carbon build up....

Re: more amps

Cheers Gents, This is just down to me mucking with it too much. I was told by Graham once that a good engine could idle at low speed and I wanted to see how low! Now this speed does go up as the engine warms (more than 1 radiator fan cycle or after a quick blast) to 300-400 rpm. It used to sit above...

Re: more amps

John, Did you ever solve this problem as I believe I am having a similar problem with my Commander? My problem is more to do with the idling when stationary, e.g. at traffic light, when the lights are on and the fan switches on, the volts drop below 12V, say 11.5V. The idle is low at 200-250rpm. At ...

Re: waterless coolant

Everything has to be checked before you start because once it is flushed and filled you really don't want to go back in. My bike is really a low mileage 2nd bike so i really am never going to be kicking seven bells out of it. In this case prevention is better than cure. The system can be drained dow...

Re: waterless coolant

Have been using waterless coolant for two years now and it has been boringly uneventful. One nice side effect is that it appears to heat up a bit quicker. You must ensure yourself that the coolant system is sound before you put it in and it will require a flush liquid to be put through before you us...

Re: HELP Commander Rear Chain Gaiter

I am personally hoping that in the next 5-10 years ALM will come down to a cost point that many of these issues can be resolved simply by printing some of the components out. These will need to be drawn up in a CAD package but if the original drawings are available, this can be done (or GOM scan the...

Bad paint?

Does anyone know what may be causing this effect on the paintwork of the plate that holds the foot peg? (image attached). It looks like a water mark, but I have tried various cleaning materials and even t-cut, but nothing seems to clean it.

Cheers

Re: Mirrors

They were made for a Reliant model that was never made (a version of the Kitten?), so Norton bought them a very small amount. Unfortunately there do not appear to be any more. I have seen some bikes that have alternative mirrors (presumably due to the originals being damaged), but I don't think they...

Re: coolant

I have been using Evans for a few months now. I can report no ill effects other than the cost (a flush is required before its use). My logic for the use of this, over normal water glycol was two fold: 1) significantly higher boiling temperature (local nucleonic boiling can occur at well before the d...

All interesting stuff Joe. Love the mention of the quadrotor; is this by any chance the quasiturbine concept? I think the guy in question actually wrote an article for the magazine... The Soviet Union had quite a long history with the rotary but with cars and APCs rather than bikes. They seem to hav...

Re: New owner questions

Ooh! That is exactly the battery that I have bought! A little further research indicates a possible reason why: The VR cuts off at 14.4v and AGM batteries to like taking more than 14v. I really to love my Motobatt as they have been a reliable companion on my BWM parallel twin and boxer (both some of...

Re: New owner questions

Many thanks Joe, I shall look at the connectors. My bike is a bit of a special as it uses a UAV engine case and an F1 crank re-machined to fit. So the harness looks a little strange, the bike also has a voltmeter which I have not seem on another bike. I am planning on a total LED conversion to reduc...

I believe this is the one: http://retro-motoring.blogspot.co.uk/2009/03/rolls-royce-make-wankel.html I made some enquirers about this a few months back at the heritage soc, but was told it was researched by R-R Cars out of Crew, so if there were original drawings they would be in Bentley's archives ...

New owner questions

Hi, i'm just break in the engine on my '92 Norton Commander Krauser and was looking for advice/recommendations for a few areas: I understand the 4000rpm limit for the first 250 miles from rebuild and the 5000rpm limit for the 250-500 miles, but the handbook says to progressively increase the rpm fro...
